how to tell the difference between a silky terrier and a yorkie? I was looking both breeds up and they have a lot of similarities, how do you tell them apart by looking at them? i know silkys are a bit bigger than yorkies but you also have your big yorkies that might be mistaken for a silky? can someone tell me how to tell a difference appearance wise? THANK YOU :D |
They are rectangular in shape rather than square they have longer muzzles and their coat doesnt grow as long as a yorkie. It can be almost impossible to tell some larger yorkies from silkys since the yorkies have been overbred and bred outside of the standard. It is common for peoplee to tell someone that their bigger yorkie is a silky its even happened with mine. Thats why its important to buy AKC dogs because you know you have a pure bred and get a pedigree so you know both parents are yorkies also a reputable breeder that you can trust. Even the reputable breeders throw a pup thats going to be larger sometimes |
Ohhh okay, yeah i see where the muzzle looks longer, i think i can tell the nose is kind of bigger too when yorkies have the short muzzle and small nose. The hair doesn't grow quite as long either.. thank you so much for pointing that out! (: |
4 Attachment(s) I think these pictures explain a lot of the differences. Here's the silky page: Silky Terrier Page Silkies: Attachment 386076 Attachment 386073 Here's the Yorkie page: Yorkshire Terrier Page Attachment 386075 Attachment 386074 |
Thank you for asking this question. I have wondered the same thing. |

The ears are usually set different also and the forhead is usually rounder on the yorkie more sloped on a silky. |

I would go a step farther and say the BEST, most conclusive way to tell a larger Yorkie from a smaller Silky, would be a DNA test. If you have a breed standard, classic Yorkie, and a breed standard classic Silky, you can see the differences clearly.....but with our adorable Teapot Yorkies, that clear standard difference is blurred. And a reptuable breeder will not mind at all if you were to suggest you want to DNA your baby!.......unless they have something to hide...........? |
Just curious.... Are their temperaments the same? |
