getting spayed? So Miss Minnie will be 5 months old on the 15th of May and the vet said to get her fixed around 6 months. My friend recently got a yorkie but is in the process of moving and her husband isnt so keen on the idea of a new puppy in a new house. Anyway I'm keeping him till they at least get moved into the new house. But that isn't until the middle of June. He is currently almost 10 weeks old. Here's my 2 questions 1) Would it be better to get Minnie fixed before or after her first heat or just at 6 months old? 2) And when do I have to worry about them being together? Even if she goes into heat in the next month would he be old enough to do anything? All my past dogs were fixed when I got them so I never had this issue so I'm clueless and don't want to take any chances with my baby. |
Hi Christina, 1) Nowadays you can spay your dog before her first heat, it's really up to you. You can ask your vet what he/she thinks it better. What is hard to know is when your baby will go into heat and it's preferable to spay your dog a couple of months after her heat (to avoid extreme bleeding) 2) A dog matures sexually at around 6 months. A 10 week old pup won't be interested in that :) |

Just be careful with other dogs if you don't want any unplanned babies :) |

Our vet said that getting her spayed before her first heat would dramatically reduce her chances of having mammary cancer later on. |

A friend of mine has two labrador mix and the vet told her to spay them before the female goes in heat to avoid mammary cancer. When I got Nena (she is now almost 5) the vet didn't inform me of that and I didn't know what the benefits were of getting her spayed. She isn't spayed yet, have to make an appointment around august (right now she is in heat) |

Nena is almost 5 years old :) 5 months is still early for your baby, if I remember correctly Nena was 6 almost 7 months when she had her first heat cycle |
I am a big fan of spaying before there first heat. |
