What's with the whining? Newbie Here:) My little Cruz Cayden is 10 weeks. From the time I got him until now he likes to whine alot. He's a very playful and active little guy ( 1lb 10 oz) but he whines at the very slightest sign of something he doesn't enjoy. He stopped freaking out in his cage after we just ignored him. Once he stopped freaking out and barking we would take him out and give him a treat so he kinda got the idea that barking in there means ignore and being quiet means attention.But, now he whines about most everything. Its a very faint whimper but still there. I took him to the vet and they said he's completely fine but that I just may have a whiner on my hands. It worries me because my last yorkie years ago would only whine when something is really wrong. Does anyone else have a whiny pooch? :confused: What to do? Will he grow out of it? |
He may just be working on his communication skills. Huey makes different soft noises for different things, from whines to squeaks to mmmwwwwwfff to even just sitting next to your ear and smacking loudly. He gets louder when ignored, but the little sounds are cute. Cruz may just be learning how to talk, like a child, so it make take a while for him to figure out how to tell you things. Right now he is at the point uhh uhh uhh stage.:D |
Hi and Welcome to YT! At 10 weeks old he is just a baby! He could be missing his Mom and littermates, or he could be chilly as they were also a source of warmth for him, and comfort. He has so much to learn about his new world, I imagine he may be a bit insecure at this stage, and may require some extra reassurance until he becomes more familiar/comfortable with things. Also Yorkies love to be 'with' their people, especially baby Yorkies. As they grow and mature they require less attention (well most do, lol), but now, as a baby, he's used to having someone around him at all times. I would 'baby' him for now, some just need a little extra attention till they figure things out. |

I have a whiner and she is 10 months! Teeka always wants to be with us and she will either bark or whine for attention. Your puppy is probably lonely and just wants some cuddle time or attention. Yorkies love and need people as they are a very social dog. That is just their temperament. |
The two out my four that whine are non barkers. Maybe you have a non barker on your hands. Winning is just their way of communicating with you. Usually they are in need of something. Potty time, comfort it could be anything. Plus at this age, they do miss their K9 mom and litter mates. Try getting some stuffed animals for them to sleep with. That will help them not feel so lonely. |
These are great suggestions. I have a small little bear he likes to hump all the time lol so I went ahead and put him in there with him this morning and it seems to help. I'm starting to love him more and more everyday so it bothers me when he whines because I feel like I need to do something. But its good to know that he may just miss his mommy and siblings sometimes. I'm sure lots of love will help him adjust. Thanks mommies! |
.We have a 3 year old shorkie who has been whinning since we got her at 12 weeks. We had her checked out and she was fine, She whines when another dog has a toy that she wants. She whines when she's hungry. Actually she mostly whines when she can't get her way. We just mostly ignore her when she whines. She usually gets over it. |

Actually if the truth be known, my room mate spoiled her rotten when she was a puppy and always gave into her. Now she's attached to her and she regrets it. She almost always does this when my friend is around. |
Princess Sophie has started doing this. I'm trying to ignore her but her whines turn into barks and it's frustrating. |

Your puppy is whining because he is a baby. It is not recommended to take a small breed pup from it's litter mates until they are 12 weeks old. A pup that age wants to cuddle with the pack. Your pup has no one to cuddle with. When you have a puppy that young you really need to take the place of the mom and litter mates. Let the pup sit on your lap and hold it. He needs the companionship and body warmth. When he is older he will be more independent but right now he needs a mom. |
kjc and gracielove are right. He's very young pack animal calling pack members to him as he would do in the wild. Pack members are rarely alone that young so he's just doing what comes naturally. And he's too young yet to really learn on his own to be quiet unless you try to teach him to be calm when you leave. |
