grooming Hi I am finding combing my 15 week old little boy roy his fur seems to be fluffy at the roots and is getting knotted he is so little and wriggles which makes it harder and squeeks as im at a knot his top fur is great its just near his skin my other yorkie is very silky and I have him laired cut no problem combing him |
Are you using a metal grooming comb that gets right down to the skin when you comb him? I guess I don' understand his fur being different at the roots. He still has his puppy coat and it should not be changing for a while yet. If he is tangling at the skin level you may need to use a better conditioning shampoo and conditioner. I have found that all natural products are much better for the Yorkie type of hair. The sulfates in the regular shampoos are just too harsh. Do you use a conditioning spray when you comb him? That can be a big help in keeping the fur easier to comb through and for getting out tangles as you groom. It sounds like your pup may have a different sort of coat than your other dog. He won't start getting his adult coat for a few months yet so it's hard to say what you will end up with. If he has a cotton coat he will surely need more conditioning than a silky coat would. Make sure you comb him at least twice a day so you can train him to accept the daily grooming he is going to need all his life. |
Thanks for information I use a metal comb I use a puppy shampoo and conditioner for tangles what shampoo and conditioner would you suggest I think by what I have read he has cotton fur |
1 Attachment(s) For grooming, my lifesaver has been this grooming table and hands free dryer. For daily brushings, I also use the table. Much easier than chasing him allover the bed! |
The grooming table above is a great little helper. You may need an extra pair of hands until he gets a little older and more willing to let you groom him. I use the Yorkie Splash and Shine products. They have been great for Gracie's silky coat. Isle of Dog has some really nice shampoos for dogs with problem hair. Pet Head is available in some pet stores and it is sulfate free. Supposed to be all natural, too. Bio-Groom is another good brand. The sulfate free shampoos really make a difference in the condition your dog's hair will be in. The sulfates and other chemicals strip the skin and coat badly. You can try to replace what you took out with conditioners but it just isn't the same. My groomer uses WEN on Gracie when she does her. Her hair is always beautiful shinny and silky for days after she has her spa day. I ordered some for her but haven't used it yet. I use the Yorkie Sheen detangling spray for daily grooming. It is always good to dampen the hair a little when combing dry hair anyway. I'm pretty sure that all the products I mentioned above have detangling or conditioning sprays available. Sounds like your little guy has some tangling issues so combing him a couple of times a day would probably help prevent him from getting more mats. I find that bathing and conditioning Gracie once a week keeps the fur silky smooth and it is easier to comb through. Hopefully his hair will improve after he loses his puppy coat. |
