Corn Cob My fiance and I are having a debate. He says it's perfectly fine for Dixie to have a corn cob. I say I'm not sure, but leaning toward no. Anyone know for sure either way? Thanks! |
Not sure but I would say probably not.... |
We had a garden this summer, and corn was one of the puppies favorite toys. Husks and all. I would keep it as an outside toy, though. ;) |
Well, the entire cob? Hmmm, Id say no to a Yorkie but a bite for a treat Id think would be ok. We give our Annabelle our Schnauzer a few bites, she loves corn on the cob. But Schatzie, well only one small bite. |
I would say no but its mostly because my pup is allergic to corn. She gets marrow bones instead, so I dont think shes missing out much :D |
Please don't let your doggy play or eat a corn cob. When Gus was in the hospital there was a dog there who was having emergance surgery for eatting a corn cob. He had 3 very larg pieces stuck in his intestines. He was rushed in the day after Gus's accident and had surgery but did not survive. He was a big dog,,,,, a mut, but a very good looking dog who went by the name of Rocky. I don't remember much of that time. I was a mess myself worring about Gus but I do remember the family who lost their family pet due to a corn cob. I USED to let Gus play with them but not anymore! |
I am sorry. I have misunderstood this thread. I was thinking you asked if corn could be eaten off the cob. If this is what you meant (which I don't think you did, then my earlier post applies still). ... However, if you are talking about the "cob" itself, then by all means no. A cob i don't believe is meant for ingestion whatsoever by anybody human or pet. |
Thank you everyone! I did not let Dixie have the corn cob. My gut was telling me no way! You all just confirmed it for me. :) Ok, I have to go back to wrapping now...anyone else up and wrapping? ;) |

p.s. better to be safe than sorry :) |
Corn does not digest well in anyone's stomach. Not to be too graphic here, but the last time you (as a person) ate corn, was it well digested when it came out??? I think NOT! Corn is a filler and does not break down as a lot of other food do. Suz |
NO no no - it's not! This is about the only food I have ever had hurt one of my dogs. My little 15-pound Walt Disney-type mutt was up all night crying with a stomach ache after she chewed on and ate parts of a corn cob. I had to walk around and carry her all night. And, I think I could actually feel chunks of the corn cob in her stomach and intestines. The end result (no pun intended) was that when she went to the bathroom - there were large pieces of corn cob that had gone through her - and I can attest to the fact that it was very painful for her. My vet said he has removed pieces of corn cob many times with surgery. They are no good for your dog to chew on. Darn - because they really like them. Carol Jean PS: This is just one of those things - I am sure a lot of dogs have eaten a lot of corn cobs and have had no problems ---but look what can happen! And, remember what my Vet said - forgot to mention, he said that smaller dogs have more problems. Remember - they gulp down food and eat big bites and their little stomachs and intestines are very small. And - it's true - they don't digest at all - these large chunks just have to pass through. |
