Brown speck like spots I love my Roxie, but have noticed brown speck like spots on the belly area and private area of my yorkie. The specks are around her nipples and near her private area, she scratches them and I wipe them but nothing happens. I am very concerned about them...with me being unemployed and this being my first yorkie (2yrs old now), I am trying to solve this without taking her to a vet so any advise please..... |
It could very well be an allergic reaction. I found this info online; "Close inspection of the underbelly might reveal pigment changes, either widespread or localized, often rust-colored, sometimes charcoal gray or black. Sometimes the belly skin shows tiny pinpoints of pigment that look like blackheads, but are not. This is different from "flea dirt," which washes off". If it is crusty, it could be a build up of body fluids, dirt and oil. Or it could be flea dirt....really hard to tell with out a photo! |
Hi, yes, could you snap a pic of the spots and post it here? Without a pic, I am leaning towards some sort of allergy. |

The pic shows them good. I'll let more experienced people give you advice on what they think it might be. I know you are hoping to avoid the vet, but if this were my pup, I'd want a vet to look into it. If it is an allergy, you'll need to find out what the allergy is to. Is she nursing puppies? (I ask because I don't know if that would be linked to it and if so, might help others to have that info). |

Sophie had spots like that. After switching to a high grade holistic dog food it went away. |
When I first looked at your photo of Roxie, I thought she was carrying a couple of puppies up in that little tummy. But since that wasn't in the equation I'll just tell share the following; It could be flea allergies, they do look like black specks and are common on the belly area as you described, BUT if it is flea dirt it will wash off. Have you tried a scrub bath to wash off the spots? If you have ruled out the flea dirt possiblity, it could actually be Hyperestrogenism. The symptoms of hyperestrogenism include the darkening of the skin, false pregnancy, and enlargement of the vulva and mammary glands with milk production. It also causes oily skin and a build up of wax in their ears. There are also other hormonal skin problems that could cause that skin condition, as well as allergies, but you will need to have your vet check her out and possibly run some test to determine the exact cause and the best treatment. The good news is that all these issue are treatable, and your sweet little Roxie should be just fine. |

Brown Specks Thanks everyone for the advise and I sort of thought it was flea dirt or something...its like crusty and when I wipe it after a while it goes away Im thinkn a nice bath will do...However should I get her treated for fleas or change her bed or what so that it does not reoccur again. Loving this website:) |
Something New Thanks everyone for the good advice, actually the specks began to go away actually. But I have a new issue to ask about, I was looking through her hair today like I always do and discovered what looks like dandruff...is she dirty or exactly what is it and what causes this to happen.:confused: Thanks Roxie's Mom |
