New to Forum and to Yorkies Hello! I'm new to Yorkie Talk and have a 3 month old Yorkie named Blake. I have to say I'm a little overwhelmed...Blake is my first Yorkie and he is SUCH A HANDFUL!!! Please tell me this little guy will calm down at some point...my husband and I are starting to worry we made a mistake in getting him...:confused: |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! Puppies are a lot of work like a new human baby. I can say that it is worth it at least it was for me and I could not imagine my life with out my little girl. |

And yes, many yorkie youngsters are quite a handful, but they DO grow up. They are extremely smart and most are very independent so that makes for training challenges. Don't let their small size and beautiful coat fool you. They were originally bred for hunting small rodents - mice, rats, etc. It took courage, intelligence and independence to be successful at this task. The true terrier personality is one of the traits that endear us and frustrate us the most with our little Yorkshire Terrors (uuuhhh I mean terriers). |
Oh goodness. Welcome to Yorkie puppyhood, LOL! Yes, your little guy will calm down. At 3 months, he's the equivalent of a human 2 year old. It will take some effort on your part to teach him what is acceptable and appropriate behavior, but the payoff will be more than worth it! Congrats on your new baby! And don't forget to post pics - we love to ooh! and ahhh! over the babies. |
Welcome to YT! Blake is going to be a handful for a while. He's a baby and he's teething, learning his boundaries, searching to discover his world. I'm not going to tell you it is going to be easy. It's not. Terriers are a stubborn breed. But soooo worth the time put in. I promise. Just hang in there. As mentioned above, just as you would with a human child...these pups are time consuming and sleep depriving. You'll get there though. Come here for moral support and ask any questions you have. We will be here for you and Blake! :) |
welcome to YT...please don't think you made a mistake bc Blake will calm down and he will be your best companion ever. There is lots of support and information on this forum to help you through the puppy stage:) |

Welcome! I have a crazy lil pup too. She's quite the handful. Just try to train him and try to be patient w/him. I know it's frustrating but from what I hear it'll be worth it when they're older. Good luck :) |
Welcome to YT. Yes, it does get better. I'm still in the puppy stage myself, Bentley is 5 month, but I have see the crazies maybe not diminished, but he's able to be focused elsewhere. I would suggest puppy training of some sort. Also a good tip I have learned is a tired puppy is a good puppy. Find what he loves to play and play him out. A good game of fetch in the evening until Bentley's tongue is hanging out and he's ready to go to bed about 7:30 and most times sleep through the night. |
I agree with everyone else. Having a baby yorkie is ALOT like having a human baby. I remember at around a year wondering when the madness would end. It did around a year and a half:) My yorkie is 6 now and TOTALLY worth it |
Some day your dog is going to be so mellow youll actually miss that puppy energy. |
Welcome, at almost 9 months old and an obedience class, my teddy is finally starting to calm down, although he still has his psycho moments especially after I have been gone for awhile. |
Hmph, well if you find the secret to calming Blake down, be sure to let me know....I'm still scratching my head wondering when my 1 yr 4 mo old girl will slow down a bit LOL. She is so full of life. ;) You will learn that your whole family dynamic will change around them. Never a dull moment, and I wouldn't have it any other way!! |
I felt like you in the beginning. We got Jess at almost a year old and I was at my wits end. Truthfully the first month I was ready to throw in the towel. She is starting to calm down at a year and a half...she is still like a baby in many ways but its easier.. |
Thanks everyone! It sure helps to hear that I'm not the only one that is having a fit of a time. Blake is not my first dog, I've had dogs all my life. I had a German Shepherd for 18 years. Gypsy was my baby and when I had to have her put to sleep four years ago, I swore I'd NEVER have another dog. But I missed having a dog and told my husband I was ready. Blake has reminded how much work a puppy is... |
