Brand new puppy sounds like he's gagging ? Hi guys my friend ended up getting an almost 13 week old yorkie today and he's precious! She had been around him twice before he brought him home but when she put him in the Cage and started driving home he started making a noise almost like he was choking. He stopped and then like an hour later when he was around her kids he did it again for a minute and stopped. I doesnt sound like kennel cough to me , has anyone heard of a puppy reacting in an almost gagging sound way to stress ? It was obviously a very big stressful day for the little guy |
A trip to the vet is probably best. It could be Kennel Cough. I hope that the new puppy will be ok. |
The first thing anyone should do with a new puppy is take it to the vet asap for a thorough check up. You can discuss these episodes with the vet to make sure it is not something more serious. Two of my dogs have similar episodes that sound like gagging, and it happens when they get startled or over excited, although there are other causes. It is a minor spasm condition, and usually stops on it's own within less than a minute. Only a vet can tell you for sure. That's what he's doing it lasts not even a minute and its not frequent or long like kennel cough and he's only done it in the car and then when he was swamped by 3 munchkins:) he has a vet appt in 4 days for his next shots. If it gets worse though she's taking him sooner. |
He definitely needs a full check up just as a rule. That being said, in 40 years around them, I have never seen a Yorkie that didn't have episodes of reverse sneezing, usually from some type of stress or excitement. |
Yes the vet will now what it is and if you need to be concerned. |

Please ask your friend to take the puppy to the vet asap. You never know with these little ones, it could be something more serious and only the vet can determine that. Please also keep us posted on what happens.:) |
Thanks to reading on Yorkie Talk about reverse sneezing (which I had never heard of), I was better able to understand when my little Kayla first did it. It was rather frightening to see and I thought she was choking. Small dogs can also get damage to their trachea (collapsed trachea), which can sound somewhat the same, but is very serious. It is important to use a harness, not a collar on them for walking. |
