Oh, those sharp teeth
 
My little Sophie has still not lost any of her needle sharp teeth. She is 22 weeks old. Has anyone else experienced a yorkie waiting so long to loose their first teeth?:teeth:

My Yorkie is supposed to be spayed at 5 months and have any remaining baby teeth removed then while she is still under anesthesia. If anyone thinks I should wait longer to have her spayed and her baby teeth removed, please chime in! I've still got 2 months before the procedure...

Mine has the double canines right now, he's 7 months old. He is down to just 2 doubles left to go. He has already been nurtured so the vet is giving him 4 months to get the canines out himself before he has to pull them. I haven't heard myself though of one not losing a single tooth by 22 weeks.

Does she have chew toys that may help with the process?

I would sure wait past 5 months. If the adult teeth are not in yet then wait. Usually if they are going to have retained teeth the adult teeth will come in and the baby teeth will be behind them. At that point you know they are going to need help getting them out. They can get a bad infection if the baby teeth are not removed after the adult teeth are in.

Hi, are you suggesting that I wait to have her both spayed and baby teeth extracted, or have her spayed at 5 months and wait a few months to have her remaining baby teeth extracted later (if necessary)? My vet said that Yorkies have their first heat at around 6 months and to have her spayed before then, but I've read other people on this site say that Yorkies have their first heat around 10 months. The vet wanted spaying and tooth extraction done at the same time to save money and wear and tear on the Yorkie.

PS -- I'm sorry to hijack this thread, but I figure the answers would also be helpful to the person whose Yorkie hadn't lost any baby teeth at 22 weeks.

Oh, please! Don't worry about that.

She has tons of chew toys and chews on bully sticks a lot during the day (not to mention chewing on me). She is 2 lbs. as of this week. I can't help but wonder if her size has anything to do with it.

My Vet told me they should lose thier baby teeth between 4 and 7 months. My Chloe started at 18weeks at least that's the first one I saw. At 7 1/2 months she had lost all her baby teeth but two. She had retained her top two and the adult teeth grew in front of them. I was going to have her spay between 9 to 11 months. When I took her to the Vet to have her teeth checked they suggest I have them removed as they were not loose and who have to be taken out. I didn't want to mess with her mouth and have rotten teeth or maybe having these baby teeth mess up her adult teeth . I decided to have have her spay early at 7 1/2 months and the two retained teeth removed. I didn't want to have her put under anesthesia twice. I went to the Vets on a Friday she had bloodwork done and had her surgery on tuesday and is doing great. I would suggest you call and talk with your Vet to find out what's going on they may want to do an x-ray to see.

We were just at the vet Friday. He was a little surprised that she hadn't started loosing any teeth. I think I'm more worried about it than the vet at this point. With my boy, I started finding little teeth all over the place at about 4 mo.

I personally think 5 months is just too young to do a spay on a small puppy. Why have to go through having to put her under anesthesia twice? It is hard to say exactly when your pup will have her first heat but usually it is not that bad for a small pup. You do have to be very careful if you take them outside and protect her from any whole males in the neighborhood.
Yorkies do tend to retain teeth more often than other breeds for some reason.

Hi Gracie, I've been doing more reading and decided to hold off until 6 months for the spaying and juvenile teeth extraction. Bella weighed 3 pounds at 12 weeks, and she looks like she's continuing to grow and thrive as a healthy puppy. Is there any reason to hold off longer than 6 months? I definitely don't want her to go into heat before she is spayed...

Rufus was almost a year old and he still had some baby teeth..the vet told me that it was common on yorkies..
We made an appointment and the vet extracted the baby teeth..

There are studies that are finding that there is the possibility of problems in female dogs that are spayed early. Even 6 months is considered early. I am giving you a link to a short article that mentions some of the problems female dogs can face due to early spay.

There are more in depth explanations available if you are interested. Many shelter adopted the practice of early spay many years ago due to the increased growth of the unwanted pet population. It seems that some of the growth and hormones that an older pup has are needed for health later in life

It sounds like your little girl is growing at a very healthy rate. Watch her mouth carefully and make sure the adult teeth are coming in and that the baby teeth are falling out on their own. Otherwise you may end up having to have two procedures done.

Thanks for the article! I will research this more thoroughly. I'm not concerned about population control, because Bella is an indoor dog and is only outside when she is carefully supervised and on a leash. I will ask the vet more questions when I take her in for her 16 week shots.

Cooper will be 6 months old on May 7 and currently weighs 3 1/2 lbs. My vet suggested that we wait until the end of June to have him neutered so that he can extract any remaining baby teeth at that time. The fewer times they need to go under anesthesia, the better.

Pixie had teeth removed during her spay as well.
