Have you ever seen a flock of hawks? 1 Attachment(s) OMGosh...I checked our trees before taking the girls out to potty, and didn't see the hawk. I made them stay close to me and as I was standing there watching the sky, I noticed a huge flock of birds that flew just behind our yard and headed south. I saw that they barely flapped their wings and just glided. They got about a block away and turned to come back my way. I quickly got the dogs in the house and watched them glide right over my back yard. Yikes. I ran in to get the binoculars and camera, because I just couldn't believe they would be hawks. I've never seen so many together. Sure enough...they were hawks. I only got 9 in the picture, but am sure there was probably 20 or more of them. Yesterday I saw that hawk that was here a week or so ago, so have been very careful, but seeing this really creeps me out. |
Wow, I've never heard of that! There must have been a lot of something close for them to group together like that. Crazy! |
I think those are vultures..they usually fly in groups. Hawks are very much loners and territorial birds. They are very menacing though..when flying over head. Something must be dead close by..it's happened here and was very eerie |
You can tell those are buzzards by the "split tips on the wings"....see how the feathers are separated at the end of the wings....hawks have a different wing structure...their wings "finished" on the ends...I do not know the correct terminology, but buzzards wings look fringed at the ends, hawks have wings that are smoth and finished off....like the wing of a sparrow.... |
Omg! Scary!! I do agree, I think they are buzzards. From what I have learned hawks are solo- they mate up, but they wouldnt " hunt" like that. That looks like buzzards flying over something dead or something on it way. |

Yes, no matter what it was, it is still super SCARY and just feels weird when they are so close to you - they are just so darn BIG!! I just walked in from taking the pups out for their last pee for the night (I mean less than 2 mins ago). An owl flew right over all of us when we first went outside. He was so low and right over my head - I could've hit him with a 2x4 if I was holding one - that's how close and low he was. FREAKED ME OUT!! Luckily, Shelby loves chasing and barking at them and he got the helloutta Dodge. All of these big birds are so beautiful to watch far far away. They are freaky and creepy when right over yours and your baby's heads! |
You guys who called vulture are right!!! :) Those are Turkey Vultures. They are migrating now and are getting to there breeding grounds.. ND is totally in their range. NO WORRIES. These birds are totally carrion (dead) eaters and scavenge. They are wonderful for the environment & pose ZERO threat to live furry things, including yorkies! |
Oh, and vulture & hawks keep their distance, so they co-exist very well. |
Just FYI, there are no "buzzards" in US. The Buzzard is a vernacular for the European relative of the Red-tail Hawk. All we have are vultures (Black and Turkey) in US. People call vultures buzzards. |

Once I was in my hot tub, and a turkey vulture landed on my deck railing about 6 ft. away. Damn, that thang was large!!! It was lookin at me & i said, "Do I look dead to you?" :p :D They're big and scary looking, but are really good garbage cleanup birds. |
