Confused?? (Doggie Playpen or Crate) I do not know exactly if i should get a crate or playpen for my puppy to sleep in (I will be getting in a few weeks). |
Hi, I got mine a small dog/cat carrier at Petsmart. The size should be large enough for the dog to comfortably lay down in, but not much larger or it will potty inside the crate. Petsmart also sells dog crates with an adjustable divider so you can make the living area larger as the dog grows, but mine is doing great inside the regular pet carrier. Be sure to line the carrier's bottom with a soft towel or blanket and keep a favorite toy inside to comfort the dog. I keep my carrier beside my bed on my nightstand so when she needs to potty in the middle of the night, I can hear her whines/barks and take her out to potty. At 8 weeks, my Bella only had to potty once in the middle of the night. Be sure to remove access to food and water at least one hour before bedtime. |
Crate vs playpen depends on your choice of potty training methods, and what you think your sleeping arrangements might be in the future. If you plan on crate training, you will need the crate. If you plan on pad training, the playpen is handy for limiting freedom when you can't supervise. Max and Teddy slept in an xpen next to my bed until they were ready to sleep in my bed. They have crates too, but we never used them for anything other than a little hideaway in which they can come and go as they please. |
I have used both. I prefer the playpen because the puppy can go in there even when it isn't sleeping. For example when you are doing your floors or maybe gone to the store. My Adie had to be crated because she could climb out of ANYTHING. She once climbed up the back of the couch! But she got used to the crate and went in it automatically when she saw us getting ready to go somewhere. |
I would use a crate at night but a play pen during the day for when you can't watch your pup and for when you need to go to work or the store. |
Both work well . I have a crate that can be made bog or small and has it owns bath space..I love it Its from richell |
I use both, playpen for day with crate inside for nap time, then move crate to my room for nighttime. I also use crate to transport my pups on long drives, or instead of using shoulder carrier. |
I too struggled with that decision when I got my puppy a couple months ago. Well it turns out she HATED the crate, she would scream, bark and cry constantly! I got an xpen and she sleeps in there at night on her bed with some toys and a pee pad. She doesn't like going in there during the day but doesn't mind at night...go figure haha |
I bought Blazer's crate at Target- small pet carrier for only $15. He loves it for sleeping in at night and now that he is almost 11 months old I don't have to crate him when I leave him at home (though I do keep him in the lower level as opposed to running the entire house.) Not a huge investment if you end up not using it all the time or for too long, or if your pup outgrows it! =) I think having a crate is great but depending on your lifestyle (I'm a SAHM) you may want an x-pen, too. =) |
1 Attachment(s) This is the crate our Bella sleeps in at night. It's small enough to keep on the nightstand, and when she whines in the night, I can take her out to potty. She sleeps quietly in the night except when she needs to potty. She only potties once in the middle of the night, and again when I wake up. |
