Airline pet policy - I feel ripped off Two years ago when I flew with my dog, USAir charged $125 each way. And since I was paying for a "ticket" for him, he did not count toward my carry on luggage count. In making my reservation this time, I was told that he DOES count toward my carry on limit of one bag and one personal item. So that means that in addition to my $125 fee for the dog, I also need to pay to check a bag. The agent couldn't tell me what I am getting for $125, except the "privilege of bringing my pet." The airline is not allowing any additional space on the plane, and since he must stay in the carrier the airline certainly isn't providing any "services" in flight. So what are they providing for my $125? Nothing. I know airlines are having trouble making ends meet, but I still feel ripped off. |
is that not the truth |
Southwest charges $75.00 for your pet....and they have a better than most baggage fee policy... |
I know what you mean. We don't have southwest so we are always being charged an arm and a leg for flying |
I agree with Yorkiemom1. Southwest is the way to go. |

That is definitely not fair. I would feel ripped off too! |
We just paid $100 at Jetblue so our 2nd Yorkie could come home with my SIL. Total rip off epecially when this "service" has to be phone in and can't be arranged when booking online. So from now on our traveling arrangements will mean a minimum of $300 round trip on SW or a minimum of $400 RT on Jetblue???!!!!?? |
Sigh. I still think, you are lucky in America. Here in Australia, dogs have to be checked in as cargo! |
Agreed! Maybe I'm biased, and nothing against children, but it's really aggravating that I have to pay $100 for my dog that doesn't bark or bother anybody to sit in a bag UNDER a seat when people with children of a certain age are allowed to fly them for free and they cry and kick etc. |
You got lucky the 1st time. I have always had mine count as carry on :( |

I always feel ripped off when I take my boys to NM when I visit my Mom. They charge $75/each way for the carrier and allow 2 dogs in it. But they have to stay in the carrier under the seat the WHOLE time, and it can be my only carryon also. That's why I carry a HUGE purse with me when I travel with them! Airlines are SO not pet friendly, it's ridiculous! |
Airlines are not friendly, period. And they are going to stick it too passengers any way possible. I used to love to fly, but not anymore. DH worked for a time for TSA. He told me horror stories of what happens to peoples' belongings behind the scenes. There's no way, no how I would entrust my pet to those cretins. |

Why don't you tell me exactly how you feel? :D |
The first time I flew with my oldest daughter, she was 2 1/2. I was petrified that she was going to cause a scene! Thankfully, she was a total angel on our 90 minute flight. Other passengers commented on how good she was. My youngest? You couldn't pay me to put that little hellion on a plane. The last time we flew was to Orlando for a Disney trip. There were 2 kids on that flight that should have been checked into cargo! |
