pill pocket?
 

have you tried pill pockets? it looks like a tiny hot dog kinda and it's a lttle hollow for the pill. I just break one in 1/2 and roll it around the pill and my dogs just swallows it. good luck keep us posted

This has me thinking now
When I asked my vet they said they only give it to dogs when there going to the lower 48 and that heartworm has never been transmitted to Alaska.
We've never given any of our dogs heartworm:( Should I ask for it anyway or probably get a new vet:confused:

To be honest, I don't know about Alaska's climate. Perhaps it actually is like "quarantined" and the mosquitos don't carry heartworms.

I suppose if it were me, I would just consult another vet to see if they say the same thing. If they do, then, it is what it is. If the other vet disagrees with your current vet, I'd still get the meds. Not sure changing vets is necessary if you like your vet and feel comfortable with him/her. (that is very hard to find..I'm not any where close to comfortable with my vet and am still looking for the "right" one)

My little 3 pound Luci is HORRIBLE to give a pill to. I have to put her Sentinel in the back of her throat and then rub till she swallows and then I take a syringe with some water in it and give her that to swallow. Then I check the inside of her mouth to make she has actually taken it. I then put her in her playpen for 30 minutes after and then check all around before I let her out. Thank heavens I only have to do this once a month.
Good Grief you should see what I have to go through with a liquid medication. For 3lbs she a lot of fight in her. LOL

Ill have to find it later but I saw a state chart and there was cases of heartworms in Alaska. I will find it and post it tonight. Heartworm meds are cheap(as little as 8 bucks a month). For that cheap IMHO, I would give it regardless of where I was because heartworms cause a lot of damage to the heart IF they ever get them and while heartworms can be treated the damage done to their heart can't be undone.

Sorry, to hear all the people who have to fight their doggies. I have to fight my 70lb dog for any medication so I've resulted in heartgard plus and frontline plus with him. Before I would hide it in wet dog food which is something he would only get once

I've learned that the little dogs are harder to medicate.

Anyone usually Heartgard make sure your dogs are chewing it up instead of letting them swallow it whole. Any one who's dog gets upset stomach when giving heartworm meds give it around meal time.

LOL you would think I wouldn't have a problem with Luci. I was a Vet Tech for 10 yrs, and I tell you I have tried all the tricks in the book for her Sentinel.

Wait til he's asleep. Pick him up and love on him. Give him a Zukes or some sort of treat, give him a wrapped up pill in a pill pocket, and then immediately (no time between), give him another reg treat. Half asleep and treats being popped one after the other...he'll never see it coming :D

The way his paws are cut he looks like a little stuffed bear, and so he looks so sweet until you get a pop from him LOL

I know of a few in Canada who don't do HW meds and I am sure it's similar in Alaska. Honestly, I wouldn't give HW meds during Alaska's winter months but I really don't know what the weather is like in the summer.

I keep my pups on Heart Guard all year round. At one time a few years back I started only giving them half of the chewable chunk to cute back on the cost and of course because there are no mosquitoes out in the winter. Once my vet found out they said that if one of them would contract heartworm that Heart Guard Co. would not cover the cost of treatment unless they were on the medication all year round with proofrovided by the vet. He also said that they need the entire chunk because the medication may not be evenly distributed in the HG chunk. Not sure that I belive that or not, but they are now all getting the entire HG chunk year round.

I just dont get why if I treat my dog year round than why do they make me get them tested every year?

Does everyone else's vet test for heartworm once a year?

I actually lost a dog to heart worm. There was so much that was still not know about it and we just didn't think it would ever happen. He was being seen for an expended belly when we found out that he had a ruptured spleen and heart worm that same day. Knowing that I was partially responsible by my lack of knowledge about HW and my choice in leaving him un treated lead to his passing is one of the worse feeling ever.

Dawn, they make you get them tested every year because Heartworm Prevention is just that - it helps prevent. However, there is still a very small possibility that your dog can contract heartworms. It is kind of like the birth control pill. As you may know, on certain rare occassions, a woman can STILL get preggers on the pill.

So, it's not 100%...nothing is. But it is still very effective. I hope reading this statement doesn't talk someone into thinking it's "ok" not to give heartworm prevention. Remember the analogy of the birth control pill - if you aren't wanting what you are preventing, then the meds are a gazillion times worth taking! ;)
