Newbie! and a few questions? hello everyone, im looking into getting my first yorkie. I have found a breeder who is AKC and She has a 6 month old female im looking into adopting. my question is $1500 too much? am I getting a great deal or is the breeder looking for money? she is potty trained all her shots are done. ill get full breeding rights and AKC papers. what do you think? and she is going to be 5 pounds. |
Actually, assuming she is of good lines that have been health tested and you get a good health guarantee, that price isn't bad for a 6 month, potty trained female w full breeding rights. Are you looking for a breeding female? |
I want to breed in the future but as of right now im just looking for a pet. |
I paid 2,000 for my one year old so its sounds fine to me..the going rate i found was between 1300-2500 |
Normally but not always a good reputable breeder will not give you breeding rights because they want to protect there lines and don't want there dogs contributing to over population or other stuff. If the breeder does genetic testing, dose't use the word teacups or breed for super tiny dogs like by using females under 5 pounds to breed then I would say its a good price but if she doesn't do that stuff I would think it was very over priced. |
I asked and she said she doesn't do health testing but she will give me a health guarantee n that she doesn't test for any thing or DNA her babies but she owns grandmother n mother n they have no known sickness |
i asked her if she DNA'd and she said no and she didn't even test their health and she said she shouldn't have a health problem as she never seen one in her grand mother and mother |
I personally would never buy a dog that didn't have health testing. |
am i over reacting? |

The entire reason it is suggested that paying $1500 (an upwards) is worth it is because of the costs that reputable breeders put into their babies...including health testing. Your baby needs to be tested for genetically passed on ailments. Also, if the breeder is willing to give breeding rights, then that sounds fishy to me. Please don't breed if you don't have experience in it. I would say that about any breed, but especially toy breeds. Just too many bad things can go wrong - even with well experienced and educated breeders. I don't know...to me, that is good money for a good, reputable breeder kind of price. If I was going to pay $1500, I would find a breeder that was YTCA recommended. I am just saying, without spending money on this pup, what expenses has the breeder incurred to charge $1500? Every reputable breeder I know doesn't even make money most times and they charge that or more. Why? Because they are spending that or more on the pup's necessary care and testing...JMHO |
