The danger of Pool's and Spa's !!!!!!!! I'm not a Person that posts a lot  but I'm ever checking in what is going on here ;) I have read a post from a member here on YT that lost here baby Yorkie in a Swimming Pool , sadly that has happened 10 years ago to me also it was not the Pool but the Spa. It makes you feel so very guilty....and you go through all the could have and should have...but it takes just a second and an accident can happen. I was a nerves wreck every time one of my Yorkies went outside :( So I looked high and low on how I can prevent something like that again and I found a product called Skamper-Ramp - Super Skamper-Ramp - Dog Ramp - Dog Pool Steps It has made me relax more and not freak out when my babies are outside and they run and chase each other around the Pool. Hopefully this will help and prevent anyone from loosing there baby to drowning. |
Wow! I don't have a pool or spa and always just thought like the video.."Hey, dogs can swim." I didn't even think about getting OUT once they swim to the side. This is a very nifty little device. I was asking as I was watching, "Well, how will they see it if they can't see the steps?" and the video answered that. Thank you for sharing this. I am so very sorry for what you went thru and for your loss. I did read the other thread and I am just heartbroken for that person, also. Hopefully, by sharing this, you just saved a pup's (or pups') life! :) |
that's amazing! thanks for posting this! |
I am so sorry what happened to you. Getting out of a pool is absolutely an issue, especially for a small dog...larger dogs can walk out with some kinds of pool steps. I had a Shep/Lab mix years ago who climbed and squeezed herself through a small gap to get into an above ground swimming pool that was completely fenced all the way around and padlocked...and she did this while I was at work. She had the good sense to hang onto the ladder and rest, and she learned to climb the ladder, too, but it is scary to come home to find your dog swimming in a pool you didn't think she could get into...and after that, she couldn't any more because we blocked that tiny space. ;):p:D This is a sweet product...but one I'd want to train my dog to so they'd know where to swim to, especially in a large pool so they could get out using the ramp. Thank you for posting this. :) |
I know someone who has an in-ground pool with a cover. One day they let their Bishon out in the yard while they went to eat. When they returned, they couldn't find the puppy. The puppy had fallen in the side of the pool and got under the cover and couldn't get back out! They tried CPR but the puppy did not make it! They are so guilt ridden and didn't even think that she could get in the pool with a cover on! Heartbreaking lesson! |
These little guys are our kids and we need to do all we can to protect them.....plus as we all know Yorkies are fearless ;) and that alone can be a problem. |
That is a cool product. I believe one lady on here actually taught her pups how to get to the steps from anywhere in the pool. She would placed them in the pool at random places and showed them how to get to the steps. Eventually they automatically would swim to the steps every time on their own no matter where they are in the pool. It's some protection but we must always remain diligent with these little guys. |
Very good info! This is a cause near and dear to my heart, as my little brother was 5 when he drowned. We run a foundation to prevent drowning awareness & water safety. Thankfully, Jackson is extremely savvy in the water (a total water fool!) and he knows exactly where to go to get out, because he swims all summer long. But I know our JRT mix has fallen in a few times while running around and she has very short legs, and panics. Instead of going towards the steps, she freaks and tries to get out the sides. We're always out there with them so we just go help guide her out but it would be very scary if it happened while she was alone! |
I know the dangers because we have a 3 ft pond in our backyard also a spa. The only time one has fallen in is when we are out there. We really dont let them out there unless we are out there anyway since our front yard is fenced we let them out there. Im sorry you found out the hard way the dangers of swimming pools and spas |

Nice product, question for the OP, do you have the small one or the large one. If you don't want to install it over the ladder I was wondering how you attach it to cement. It's hard to tell from the photo. My sister has a built in pool and a yorkie, Lucy avoids the pool but I do think she has fallen in before. This is also very good for wildlife, I know it is very distressing for my sister to find a dead animal like a raccoon floating in the pool. You can see some of the photos picture wildlife using it to get out. Thanks for the post |
Thanks for the alert. It reminds me recently in my country , a case of a dog died in a pool at the day care. The owner placed the dog at the day care and this tragedy happened! It was really a sad case :( |
