Barking All Night Hi guys my little guy Diesel is all healthy now but he has just started barking almost all night and I can't seem to find much advice other than to give him a ticking clock, which I am going to look for today. He had been doing good and would just occasionally wake up and bark for a little bit but lately he barks almost all night and it is wearing us out. It starts earlier each night....last night it started at 1. He sleeps in a wire crate with his bed in the front and pee pad in the back. I leave him with a nylon bone and stuffed animal. I cover the crate with a sheet. Has anyone been through this and have any suggestions? We have him in a spare bedroom with the door shut but our house is small and we still hear him. Also we play with him all evening after we get home from work and would think that would make him tired. Thanks!! |
Have you tried putting the crate in the same room as you? Yorkies want to be with their humans and although the door is closed to the other room, he can still smell and probably hear you. He might settle if he is nearer. Maybe put the crate next to the bed where if he gets restless, you can put a hand down to him and reassure him you are near? |
May I assume that Diesel is a rather young animal ? Yorkies can be rather possessive and protective, right from the start. Your "play time" with him, reinforces the bond you have, and I'm not saying not to do that, however... When you separate from him, it's like your abandoning him, and he wants to keep an eye on you, to keep you safe. This is a strong representation of the Pack Mentality which all Yorkies are bread to possess. I suggest that you move his crate to a near location in your bedroom. Possibly on the night table next to your bed, where he can see you. I do this with all my new Pups, where when they get lonely, all I have to do is stick a finger in the Crate where they can touch me, and they settle down quickly. This is a very basic need for them, you should support it. Let him be your Protector. ;) PS: HA, Marhcarter and I were writing the same basic response at the same time. Like Minds ! :thumbup: |
my Chip who I just got at 12 weeks 5 days ago cries for a very short time then settles right down at night. His pen is in our room and he had a Snuggle Puppy with warmth and a heartbeat that I put with him from day one. Last night I forgot to turn on the heartbeat and he was still fine. I think being in the room with us makes all the difference. Good Luck! |

Yes Diesel is only 16 weeks old and he has only been doing this for the last week and a half or so. He used to sleep until about 4 in the morning and bark for a bit but then quit. I guess I could try putting him in our room but I am afraid when we get up in the night to go to the bathroom he will wake up and bark anyway. Quote:

When I get up in the middle of my sleep cycle to potty (usually 1 or 2pm) Huey gets up, too. I let him out to potty, then he climbs right back in bed and goes back to sleep with me. He does sleep in the bed under the covers, but I think the concept is the same. |
Well I took your guys advice and put Diesel in our room last night in his crate and he never made a peep and he didn't use the bathroom in his crate either! Thanks again for the help!!! :) |

I am going to suggest a good long walk before bedtime. Sophie Kate used to get up in the middle of the night and want to play (think Nyla bone being dropped on your head). This was resolved by making her really tired and a good long 30 minute walk was the answer. This also made for good night time habits, she learned that the final walk of the night is her time to potty before bedtime. |
Can you get flaps for dogs like you do with cats so they can go in the middle of the night without waking me up? I guess this is only for small dogs, or burglars would get in! |
