Why are Rawhides even made? I know this is a subject discussed a lot. It just baffles me why rawhides are even produced. And WHY a pet store would stock an entire aisle of them (e.g. PetSmart)...? I have never given any dog (big or small) a rawhide. My vets have always told us never to give them rawhides because they don't digest...not to mention the choking hazards. I just don't get why they are even made and sold in stores if even vets know they are dangerous. Grrrr |
I agree and other things are stocked and sold that are unsafe like greenies. I think most pet stores are catering to the big dog owner more anyway most of the toys and stuff are for bigger dogs. Big dog owners though shouldnt be giving raw hide either but I bet they do from the amount thats on the shelves |
Those companies don't care- that's why! What I want to know if those people that work at the rawhide companies- *if* they give their dogs rawhides??!! |
I could even "get" the companies that make them doing it if they sell. What I don't get is why places that are FOR these animals (like PetSmart, etc) would sell them. It's so silly. And sadly, you know they do it for money...which means they DO sell, which means there are so many dogs out there ingesting them :( |

My co-workers showed me a picture of her son’s lab puppy eating a rawhide- I immediately told her “ you better tell your son to take that away and NOT give him rawhides” Which she did and she explained the dangers, he now uses bully sticks for him. |
All we can do is educate- Any one that comes on here- or anyone even mentions feeding rawhide, I will tell them the dangers. Half the time they don’t know. The more we educate people, the more they can spread the word to their friends with pets. |

I will admit - I never really researched my dogs beyond "temperment and how hard to take care of and such" before I got Mandie. However, I've always been attentive to what I let them ingest. I've really grown as a doggy mommy since last August :) |

Even if someone did research you would be surprised at the lack of information out there on the net. We just get a wealth of info on here so other people that arent on a forum like this dont get that info |

Awww, thank you! :) Ditto!! :D |
I have had yorkies for over 10 years. I have learned more in 5 months since I joined YT than in all those 10 years! I have become the best "mom" to my yorkies because of YT! :yorkietal |
I agree the rawhides should not be made. There are a lot of things being sold for dogs that are so dangerous. Most of the toys I see in pet stores and department stores have choking hazards as well. And don't get me started on the treats! |
My mum has had any dog we ever owned hooked on these. The ones made out of big shoes? etc. I thought it was good for their teeth. I should look more into the ingredients. Because I never really understand the process of how it is made. |
Rawhides are made for the same reasons as pet food, & pet treats. ......MONEY! It's always been up to us to protect our little companion animals from bad food, bad Vets. bad medications and all. We have to be the ones in charge and to protect them. |

That's bad enough, but then you also have little pieces that can come up and get lodged in the throat. I've heard so many horror stories of dogs dying from choking to death (this can happen from any chew so always monitor chews - especially in small breed dogs). |
I remember growing up always giving them to our Golden Retriever, and she used to swallow whatever was left whole. She'd also poop them out. I guess we got lucky... but still I can remember her gagging, etc! My dad always gave them to her. They were just the common thing back then, it was really all that was available for them to chew. Jackson choked on one when he was younger and it was scary! I will occasionally give him the CET chews but honestly, he doesn't even like them, he tends to just carry them around.... but they're shaped in a way that, IMo, makes them less likely to choke so long as you're supervising. |
Mandie really loves bully sticks. Everything else I give her, she will tote around and squirrel away. It's her favorite thing to do. She gets so mad when I move a pillow or something and uncover one of her hiding spots. She looks at me like, "WTH, Mom?! Do you KNOW how long it took me to get it there? Sheesh!" LOL :D |
Probably the same reason stores sold chicken jerky that killed hundreds of dogs they just want money. |
I didn't know about the dangers of rawhide :( Thanks for the information, won't give that to my babies anymore! |

Yeah, many vet have been warning against rawhide for years. I guess they are the ones that have had to do surgery to remove them from a dog's belly. The rawhide that look like a bone, that have knots at both ends, are big hazards because those knots come off after a while and can get lodged in the throat. Some of us use bully sticks for dog chews while others only use the plastic chews. Gracie is a bully stick addict. She gets really frustrated when we run out. I try to keep them on hand at all times for when she gets in the mood to chew! |
I never knew the dangers of rawhide until I joined YT. I need to try the bully sticks for Chloe. She loves to chew. |
I wasn't aware of the dangers as well. Growing up we had Rottweilers and they both loved their rawhides and would chew on those things for hours. Prior to signing up on YT, I purchased a few for Bella. However, discovering the dangers it can harm my pup I threw them out. Thankfully, I joined YT, learned new things. |
And, this is why I love YT so so much! We all learn stuff every day. It's awesome :) |

Everytime one of these threads gets started there are people onhere that didnt know the dangers of rawhide so someone is helped so thank you Mandiesmom for starting this thread |
What's worse are the people you try to educate and they have the mentality of "it won't happen to me" and continue to buy them for their dogs. I don't get it. If there is even a chance something is bad for my animals they don't get to eat it. Period. |
It's all about the $$$...kæviːɑːt ˈɛmptɔr (Latin: "Let the buyer beware") is...sadly...a for real deal.:confused::( Someone said "education"...I'd like to add "avoidance"...little "wallet chats" with manufacturers about dangerous products. :p:D |
