Yorkie and a baby We have a 2 year old Yorkie, Teddy, whom we love so so much. He is very spoiled (hand fed twice a day, sleeps in the same bed with us, and is usually very demanding little fella). He is used to being the centre of the universe. Now 2 weeks ago, I gave birth to a baby boy and needless to say, our life turned upside down. As we try to settle into a routine, I didn't really have much time to care for Teddy as much as I used to. I still try to hand feed him and take a nap holding him every time the baby is asleep, but I just feel like he feels being isolated. The first night we brought the baby home, Teddy decided he'd sleep on the sofa. It's fine with me and I go there hold him for 15 minutes before going back to our bedroom. But it breaks my heart seeing him lonely! I mean I expected him being jealous of the baby and angry but not lonely and sad. I am not really sure how to handle this as I have no free time and I am always so tired. Or am I just overreacting??? Have any of you been in similar situation?? |
Your life is probably going to be a little upside down with a new baby and for a while your not going to be able to give Teddy lots of attention but your baby is going to get older and you will have more time on your hands. Right now just when you do have time try to make it quality time snuggle or play with him or take him for a walk do things he really enjoys. It will get better in time i promise |
yes you have to give the transition sometime. plus you just had a baby being exhausted is normal. try to be sure to just give him the most love you can and things will smooth out. best wishes and congrats on your new son. |
Awww no experience with this here but I'm sure it will get better with time. Every new mom is tired all he time. Teddy will adapt and so will you it just takes time :) |
Congrats! Well Congrats on your new baby! Give everything some time, I'm sure it will all work out! Your little guy will be there for you when you need a break from the baby! |
Congrats on your new baby boy! And welcome to YT. I've so been in your shoes. I can say relax, Mommy! Teddy will adjust to the newcomer and the change of routine. He may pout for a little bit, but I can pretty much guarantee, he'll make the adjustment easier than you will. Your first priority at this point in time should be taking care of yourself. Fatigue, stress, and postpartum raging hormones are going to take you on a roller coaster ride, especially if this is your first baby. Listen to your instinct, love and include Teddy in your daily activities whenever possible, and above all, don't be afraid or ashamed to ask for help if you need it! Good luck! |

Congrats on your new baby and just know that you are not alone. We had Georgie for 2 years and then our son came along. I am convinced Georgie thought at some point Isaiah would leave LOL. Anyways, a couple of suggestions we tried to pay as much attention to Georgie as possible when Isaiah was a baby. Once Isaiah got big enough to know what gentle meant we allowed him to pet Georgie with supervision. It took a little getting used to for Georgie he has always been our spoiled furball. However, Isaiah is now 5 and they get along great:) I think just making a conscious effort when you can to spend time with Teddy will help and eventually everyone will settle in just fine:) |
Hopefully he will accept the new addition soon. I had a little Maltese when I got married. Of course kids came along and she had to get used to that. I always would let her sniff the baby and get used to the new smells. Dogs are very effected by scent so they need to know the new scent is accepted by you and should be accepted by them. Sasha would sit right by me as I nursed the baby and would follow me around as I did what needed to be done. I don't think she ever really loved having the kids around but she took on the roll of being my helper and was involved in everything that went on. Try making your little guy feel like he is part of caring for this new little one. If he feels excluded he will be unhappy. |
Thank you all so much for your encouragement and suggestions. A friend's dog had died a few weeks before and I had promised myself that no matter what, I'd still be giving Teddy as much attention as he is used to. And I was struggling hard to make it happen, but I guess sometimes you just have to let go. My baby would wake up every 3 hours, and I need to feed him, change his diapers. As soon as he went back to sleep, I'd rush ovet to play/feed/snuggle with Teddy so he doesn't feel left out, but no matter what, he wasn't happy!! And I was so tired and sleepy. I still haven't figure out how to make him happier and accept the baby, but at least I dont feel like a total failure now (my husband is back from his business trip, so now we take turns taking care of each of our babies.) |
Don't ever feel like a failure like everything it's trial and error. Georgie was a little standoffish initially. With time and patience Teddy will be just fine. PS I want to tell you how great you are for making the effort:) You should be proud of yourself for that:) |
Please please please help pray for Teddy!!! I just found him vomiting some whitish foam, but there were red dots????? oh my god!! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ml#post4212037 |
