Yikes! A Hawk! 1 Attachment(s) I am so thankful that hubby saw this hawk and warned me not to let the dogs out. He is a big thing and been up in our evergreen for at least an hour that we know of. I wonder if he is waiting for my yorkies to come out. Now I've got the creeps and have to look at what to do to keep hawks away. I'm not letting the dogs out tonight...not even on a leash. I wonder if hawks are out after dark. Here's a picture. |
I can PROMISE you.....he has seen the babies out in the yard, and he is waiting for them to re-appear! |
Reflective things like CDs hung in trees or very sparkly sequins on a dress would freak them out. Hawks hunt during the day, owls hunt at night. |
Darn those things!! They are out this year- we have one that hangs out in our backyard too!! Glad hubby noticed him! |
That is scary. I have never seen such a big hawk. I am so glad Gardel saw the hawk before you let the girls out. |
Very scary. {{{Hugs}}} |
Its not legal to shoot hawks but my hubby used to shoot in the air when one would come near the yard at the other place (not near the hawk) but just to scare them. It seemed to help keep them away for a time. |
We have them everywhere on our land and they hunt the perimeter of our house daily! |
Oh gosh...we have a hawk also. I never even thought about him. We haven't taken Jasper outside yet because he is still in the process of getting his shots. I hope your babies are okay. Will the hawk try to get to them if you are around? |
No, Connie, hawks are not out after dark, not hunting at least. They cover the day shift, and Great Horned Owls the night shift. They are the bigger threat! I can't tell for sure by that pic, but that might even be a Ferruginous Hawk (beautiful bird!!). You get them in ND breeding in spring & summer. Or it could be a light morph redtail hawk. Either way, keep your babies very close! :) |
We have seen them around here too much lately!! It is against the law to shoot them. However, I think someone told me that if they are a threat they can be killed. I guess if they try to attack or something?? I would carry a pistol out with me just in case. :D. |
Be careful about the killing hawk thing. When Cali killed the one that attacked her I had to prove I had not killed it because they are protected by an international migratory law and the fine would have been around 10,000 to 15,000 and some months of jail. I had. Little trouble proving it but fortunately the scratches on Cali's back and the vet report along with the neighbors testimony cleared me. They really kept at me about it though. They had trouble believing a just under 4 lb dog killed a hawk that weighed more than she did - had to explain the whole Terrier thing :D |

Of course, lets be honest here- if I had been there I would have killed the varmit that went after my baby and buried it so deep,it would never have been found! |
