Brand new puppy Hi all Just a few questions as I'm the proud new owner of a gorgeous yorkie called ozzy. Ozzy is 7 weeks old and fully weaned on dry puppy food. He is doing well being paper trained. Just a few things I'm not sure about. How come he is very smelly? It's a very distinct dog smell. What is best shampoo? How comes he bites everything- even tries to bite my face? Thanks in advance, this is my first dog so any help is appreciated :-) |
First, welcome to YT and congrats on Ozzie. Second, there are quite a few threads active right now about shampoos and conditioners, so lots of info out there if you just do some trolling. Third, my understanding is that momma dog teaches bite inhibition between 6-12 weeks old, so your baby might be biting becuase you got him so young. Just remember that yorkies respond well to positive reinforcement of wanted behaviors and respond poorly to negative reinforcement of any kind. Consistancy is the key to any successful training. Yorkies are a very special breed, and the folks on this forum are passionate about the yorkie breed. Good luck and let us know how Ozzie is doing and we would LOVE to see pics of your baby! Keep posting & welcome. Lots of good info to be found here. |
Welcome and love your username and the name "Ozzy". So glad you joined YT and if you will stay around, you will no doubt learn so much about Yorkies and dogs in general as we all have. At your dog's very young age, you need to watch out for hypoglycemia and symptoms of lethargy, weakness and disorientation, it could be from very low blood sugar which young, tiny puppies are often unable to successfully maintain adequate levels of in their bloodstreams and need frequent nourishment. If your dog ever starts to act like that, rub some Nutrical or local honey or Karo Syrup on the dogs gums - coat them well to get some glucose into his little system without the mixture choking him, which it might do if you put a lot down his throat. Here is a link to several good threads on puppy care from the YorkieTalk Library - a free feature here on YT. Puppy Care and Puppy Info Library - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community |
Welcome, you have already gotten some good advice, just timber with him being so young you will have to teach him manners which mom would have done if he stayed with her longer. Patience is key they are little and need to be constantly reminded how you want them to behave. When he bites tell him no or "ah-ah" in a strong voice then put him back in is play pen for a about 30 seconds. This will teach him that bitting means no fun. Also have plenty of toys available so he learns to chew and play with the right things. It will take time so have patience, mom teaches them this over the next 6 weeks so keep that in mind when you have to do this over and over and over and over again. Begin now with brushing manners. Start brushing for about 1 minute with a comb then give him a treat. Do this many times throughout the day. You want him to learn how to be groomed before his coat really needs it. Try adding warm water or wet food if it looks like he is not eating much. Hypoglycemia is a huge concern at this age. If he is smelling rub in a little cornstarch into his fur than brush it out. This will help with in between baths. There is a ton of advice on here so keep looking around |
