My First Yorkie Puppy Must-Haves Hello...I am new to becoming a yorkie mommy because growing up my grandmother was allergic to dogs so I wasn't able to have one at home but my great grandmother house she had pits..so i am very familiar with a larger breed dog with short coats..and now that I am on my own I have purchased one that will be ready in a month. I am in the process of buying all the things needed for my Yorkie puppy but I would like some suggestions on what you think are Yorkie puppy must-haves, mandatory items, and optional items.... Thanks for your suggestions in advance |
Nutrical, Crate, Playpen, Some clothing to make sure to keep your pup warm, toys, blankets, bed, some treats (make sure they are not made in China or by Purina) water dish, food dish, puppy pads, comb/brush, puppy shampoo, harness, leash, and cant think of anything else right now but I'm sure there is more. A couple tips about small breeds don't use a collar to hook the leash to because smaller breeds have a higher risk of collapsing trachea but a collar is ok for just tags. Make sure she is not leaving her mommy until 12 weeks. Look up hypoglycemia. Don't take you pup to places other dogs have been or around other dogs until she has had all her shots. Good luck and congrats on your pup. |
Know where your emergency vets are and numbers for after hour emergencies. I keep the numbers and addresses on the frig and in my cell phone. |
Very good advice already given. I just wanted to say welcome to YT and congrats!! :) |
Just to add to what Taylor has...puppy pads for potty training, blanket with mommy's scent on it to calm her. Congrats on your new baby, and welcome to YT!! |
Welcome! I used baby gates and small puppy proof room instead of a playpen. I like that better because I have a tiny house, and don't have a lot of extra room in the house. I covered the floor with plastic then puppy pads on one side and rugs on the other to protect my flooring. then put her crate, toys, food, and water on the rugs. The down side would be you cant move a small room around with you through the house... If you get a pen make sure it has a top on it. my sister had a normal baby playpen for her morkie, and she jumped out. You might want to get some chews too I like nylabones. Some people get bullysticks, but I think they stink even the "no odor" ones bother me. Avoid rawhide because it's a choking hazard and can cause intestinal blockages. |
I forgot one of these is a good thing to have also ![]() |
Congrats on your new baby! You didn't say if you're able to visit baby while yhou're waiting to bring him/her home. If you're not, a couple of weeks before you pick your baby up, get a little fleece blanket and sleep with it for a night or two to get your scent on it and then send it to the breeder so your baby will know your scent. Then he/she can sleep with it until you bring him/her home so it'll also have scents from furmom and sibs. |
How could we have forgotten the MOST important thing for someone's very first ever Yorkie?? Camera! With Video. Go ahead and make sure you have a good one now - don't wait like I did. They are fast - you will need video. :D (yes, I realize most of you have smart phones, but I didn't - she might not :p ) lol |
Good advice so far. I have a good, optional item: hard floors throughout your home. :) I know it's pricey to convert to hard floors in a home, but it's been a life saver during potty training. The clean-up is easy. Also, on occasion, Tatiana does backslide, and I find a pee puddle when there shouldn't be one. With hard floors, it's a non-issue. |
Mine were; 2 bed; one shaped like a house for privacy, one a normal bed, he was used to being in with his litter. a couple of fleece blankets, one I used to carry him to walk him round from my neighbour (the breeders) to mine :) a microfibre towel a hoody a couple of tshirts a homemade tshirt (from a fluffy sock) because nothing fitted him puppy treats puppy milk kibble (mix of the breeder, and new stuff) about 6 toys, a couple of plush ones, some chewy ones, some squeaky and a kong! amazing btw! a waterproof coat lead and collar and tag doggy bags pee pads shampoo deworming tablets food and water bowls place mat for the bowls and I did buy cesar millan books (lawl this was mainly to help me) can't really think of what else. but he's spoilt rotten now. it's only gets worse ahahhah!!! the stuff i buy now. I'm loopy!!!! Lol x |
If you dont have hardwood floors I recommend a good carpet cleaner LOL! doggy diapers are an amazing investment and have saved my carpets and helped ALOT with potty training!! Just rember to watch them very closely when or if you take them outside for hawks! I thought people were crazy when they told me a Hawk will take your dog right out of your yard until I got my babies!! Now the hawks watch my yard ... well.. like a hawk lol! we invested in a doggy kennel with a top from K9kennels.com good luck and congrats on your new baby!!! |
oh! and instead of puppy pads we bought two poddy patches because the yorkies liked to tear up the puppy pads. http://www.petmountain.com/product/d...Fcbb4AodsDEAxw |
Hello and welcome to YT. Congrats on your new pup. Baby wipes. They are wonderful to clean their little bums and pee pee. And their little feet. |
Welcome and congrats on your new little one, One thing I have learned from here is canned pure pumpkin comes in handy if they have tummy issues. |
