Blood Sugar Question Tonight, I've read two posts about blood sugar. This is one by Patti: I don't think it will hurt her. She is very young so just make sure she is eating frequent meals so she doesn't have any low blood sugar problems. QUESTION: Should there be a concern for a puppy's blood sugar, or is this more common for yorkies? NOTE: Julie is a shih tzu. QUESTION: What does the frequency of meals have to do with blood sugar? Small dogs have a higher risk of low blood sugar when there puppies. If they are eating often it keeps it stable unless there is a problem. You might want to look up the symptoms of hypoglycemia. How old is you pup? My friend had a Maltese pup that experienced hypoglycemia and she didn't realize it right away and the vet had to bring the pup back to life twice and then the pup still seems to have some brain damage. |
Food provides the sugar. Having frequent meals serves to have a steady blood sugar level. Skipping meals is bad because blood sugar drops and then spikes I would think that all small dogs are prone to hypoglycemia, but I've a shis tzu and she has never had a sugar drop, my yorkie only |
I have a related question. Rather than start a new thread, I'm adding it here (hope that's ok). I read that you should give Yorkies 2cc of NutriCal every day for a few months. Is this true? I will definitely have it on standby in case his blood sugar drops, but I'm also happy to give it to him as a precaution, if it's advisable. |
@Melina Bea: No problem What is NutriCal? |
Nutri Cal is a high calorie nutritional supplement that provides vitamins and minerals and energy. The first ingredient is corn syrup. If a puppy of dog has not eaten in a while or has been very active they could have a drop in their blood sugar which can cause a coma, brain damage and even death. It is a product that I keep on hand at all times. I got mine from the vet, but you can also find it at pet and vet supply stores. |
How would you know when their blood sugar has dropped? |
Some signs of it are lethargy, shaking, going limp |
Thank you Chachi. CONFESSION: I've been mostly feeding Julie twice a day. Looks like I really need to feed her more often. |
If you can't free feed her, she should have food 3-4 time a day. How much does she weight and how old? I have a 15 week puppy who is still under 2 lbs and I feed her 4 and some times 5 times a day. Small and frequent feedings are better with these little ones. |
WEIGHT: 5 lbs AGE: 20 weeks this Saturday 04/13/2012 |
3 meals a day should keep her sugar at an even level. If she is stressed or overly active, I would feed her more often. She is at a good weight. We had a hunting dog that would have hypoglycemic episodes after a day of hunting or very active water play. She had problems all her life, because she would not quit until you made her or she would just collapse! It just depends on the dog and their activity level. I hope this helps! |
