Crating dilemna When I have to leave my pup alone for a few hours is it cruel to cage him (no more than 4 hours if that). I feel like if he was playing and all of a sudden I have to leave then I'm forcing him to either sleep or potty because a crate doesn't give him space to do much more. I mean what if he still wants to play. I'm sorry if this sounds silly but I have never owned a dog before and I'm thinking of this from a human's perspective. |
Crates are not cruel if used correctly :) 4 hours is not too much time to be in there. With that said, I am not personally a big crater. It's just something our family has never done much except for in the very beginning. I prefer x-pens until they're old enough to have free roam. That way, in the pen, they can move a bit more, you could put a pee pad down, etc. |
I agree totally! We have a crate and a play pen (some people prefer an X-pen)! The crate is used primarily as a "safe heaven" for our pup when there are people over and we don't want her stepped on. It is also a place for her to sleep when in her play pen (x-pen). We also use it to transport her when traveling so it really serves multiple purposes!! |
I originally planned to use a 4 panel iris crate and put a plastic carrier in there for him to sleep in (with the door open), and also putting a pee pad and water in the pen, but I keep hearing people talk about their puppies climbing the pen and I was wondering for the people who have an iris crate does the mesh top help because I would prefer not to crate my puppy if I'm gone, I'm not a fan of crating and I prefer he be able to roam a little. |
What are Iris crates? I googled but all I found were storage crates. |

![]() Dexter was able to climb out of his.... Now the panels make for good doorway and hall blockers. He only tried climbing out when I had all four panels together but when they are apart, he doesn't even try... Go figure  |

We use an isis pen- but the 36" high 8 panel one (cost more but a good investment) someone on YT(Thank you!) had mentioned to always use the door and never reach the pup over the top. Abby is quite the climber but has never attempted scaling the pens walls, she waits at the door! |
I too am not a fan of crating, my pup goes into an xpen when we are gone for a few hours with a pee pad, her bed and some toys. :) |
I have blocked off portion of my house so he has some free space while I am gone, I crate only at night time |
You can cage theme. It helps to keep them safe, but not for a loooong time. 4hrs is not long, but your pup may have some accidents. |
