Newbie with a yorkie that keeps waking up...maybe noise Hello all...first time post...so please be gentle... we have a girl yorkie , unsure of her exact age, about 5-7 years old she has always been a nervous dog when it comes to sounds, she shakes for a long time if the cupboard slams for example...! lately she has been waking in the night and her ears are pricked up, sometime she gives out a little 'woof', not a bark... almost as if she can hear a sound, but we cant hear a thing... some nights she is fine but most nights she is like this...she cant seem to settle in the night...shes sleeps fine during the day and does not behave like this any thoughts?...can they get problems with there ears?... she gets lots of exercise and is in good health and well looked after, we haven't changed her food or routine, but i am working away from home at the moment and to be honest she always cuddles me more in the evenings...could she be missing me?...thing is when im back home she still does it... any thoughts on what to try first...as i say we cant hear any noise at all...thanks |
How long have you had her? My boys did the same thing with every little sound when they first came home. It took awhile for them to become used to the normal nighttime sounds of the house, then would only respond to unusual noises. (They are a great alarm system!) Good luck:) |
We have had her for about 5 years now... |
Yorkies have heightened hearing. Sophie hears sounds at night that we could never hear except faintly if we opened the door. Maybe she is hearing an owl or other night creature close to your house. |
Does she bark generally from the same area? For example Brandi will always stand at the top of the stairs when she's barking at something because that is where she can get a good look at what is outside. Is it around the same time every night or at different times? My cat used to stared at the same wall for about a week straight....it really used to creep me out. She stopped after about a week of doing this. It was always the same time of night. I still don't know if she was hearing a critter or if it was actually a ghost. |
Normally her ears will prick up and she seems to focus on the front door area...we live in ground floor flat...we were wondering if its noise from upstairs but if it is we cannot here it outsells...seems to be random times of the night |
She may hear noises that you can't hear. We use a fan or air filter on low at night to create "white noise" to cover sounds from outside, otherwise our dogs would probably woof a lot. |
My girl does that often at night. I can't hear anything, but she'll perk up all of sudden...sometimes growl, sometimes bark, sometimes bolt off in a certain direction. I've always assumed that she hears something I can't hear. I've just learned to live with it. Once she warned us that an elderly neighbor was in trouble. The husband had a seizure & the wife was lurking around the street trying to find someone with lights on that could help her. She's our little guard doggie ;) |

Since you've had your girl for a while, and this is relatively new behavior, has there been any changes in your household or with your neighbors? Have they changed working hours or are there any new pets in the area? Something in her routine of life seems to have changed as she has a heightened sense of alertness. Keep in mind that a dog can hear what the human ear cannot. Example: this happened with an aquaintance's dog, same thing you are going through, and to make a long story short ... it turned out that the woman in the duplex next to them was having a "friend" over after her husband went to work. The friend would sneak in during the night and their dog would hear the noise, but they never did ... at least not until the huband got hurt on the job and came home early one night. |

Hi and welcome to YT! She is hearing something you aren't. Animals are more "aware" when it's dark. It's instincts. So even though she sleeps okay throughout the day when there are noises going on, it is because she's not on "full alert." |
white noise machine! works great with kids so why not give it a go? |
Where does she sleep?… Maybe you can get her a crate? Make her a little den- then throw a blanket on the top of it. Peanut has been sleeping in is crate since she was a puppy- he loves it!! He has a medium size crate, I have 2 old pillows for the bed and then I have a big throw blanket in there, when he goes in he always starts “making his bed” ruffles the blanket up for him- then I have a blanket for the top. I call it his “man cave” LOL My brother was making fun of me because his 20 pound mini pincher has a smaller crate than my 4 pound Yorkie!! If I don’t shut him in his crate at night he will get all crazy and roam around the house getting into things, barking, running around- just a real nut job! |
