Types Of Yorkie Coats.. 1 Attachment(s) I have done lots of research as far yorkie coats and have realized they are pretty unpredictable which I love but my curiosity is kicking in. There is a pretty large difference in the texture of yorkies hair, some are silky and straight; others are curly and others are in between. I read on another thread that if the yorkies hair grows in quickly he or she will have curly hair and if it grows slowly the hair will be silky. What do you guys think? How have the coats on your yorkies changed? Also as far as the color Bentleys hair is coming in very light tan is that the permanent hair color. It looks like the silver yorkie but the hair on his back is still black... Does the hair on his back grow in later? Would love to know what you guys think... |
You won't know his adult color until well... he's an adult. My male's coloring changed as a puppy and started coming in silver, but now he has a darker blonde on his head and steel on his back. I thought for sure he was going to be all silver, but the grey changed. He's 4 now and seems to still be changing... |
i have heard that about silky coats growing slower but don't know if it's true. My silky coated girl was 13 months old when I got her so I don't know how her coat grew. My other 2 are cottony coats and all 3 of my girls coats grow pretty fast. |
Teddy who has an almost floor length true silk coat was silky from puppyhood. His hair grows fast and needs trims a lot. I also have Winston who has a cotton coat and his hair grows even faster than the silky coat but is a hassle to manage. His hair is dragging on the floor and I'm tempted to cut it off. Usually a black coated yorkie without breaks in the coat of that steel blue will stay black. The show breeders would know more about this though. |
The slow growing coats that are silky are usually just a better quality of silk. For example, I kept 2 puppies from a litter, one girl, one boy. The boy had very slow growing hair and went through an ugly duckling stage but in the end it was the right color and texture. His sister had a fast growing silk coat. She always had it from the beginning and never went through the ugly duckling stage. Her coat ended up being silky and beautiful but the color was too light and the texture wasn't quite as silky as the slowing growing one. Both had silky coats, one just turned out to be a better quality. As for the hair growing, the head always turns color first. The hair on the body turns color much later so its hard to say what color they will end up with. The silver on the head is usual. It goes from black to silver to tan/gold. And often the colors keep changing throughout their life so they may end up darker or lighter. |
