1 yr old twin grandbabies visiting, my yorkie's not happy Hello, My twin grand babies are staying with us and my furbaby Pepper is highly upset. He's not use to being around children as we are empty nesters and loving it lol:D We hold him while the toddlers are walking around getting into everything. He seems calm until the twins cry or scare him. We even put on his muzzle and he allowed them to rub his belly. Any suggestions on getting Pepper to feel comfortable around them?? Pepper is 3 1/2 yrs old, neutered, and very protective of me. Thanks for listening. |
I don't really have any advice for you. Little dogs, by nature, are sort of scared of little kids just because of how kids move. Hopefully, someone will chime in with some tips soon. I just wanted to wish you luck and tell Pepper to hang in there :) |
Have the toddlers drop Cheerios. I like cheerios because both pup and toddler can eat them. He will learn little ones mean treats. |

Cheerios are definitely friend-makers! Do you have an ex-pen for him? A safe place that he can watch the babies from and get used to them? Keeping them segregated is still probably the best option for his safety, especially when the little ones are getting rambunctious. My daughter will be 3 next month, and I swear I need to grow a third eye just to keep on her and Sam all the time. |
I have 9 grandkids and all my yorkies are growing up with them. Yes, I watch them like a hawk and they all have had a talk about how fragile yorkies are and they can not pick them up. Even a one year old can understand this! They have to sit on the floor and let them come to the child. Treats are a good idea. A slow introduction and a limited amount of time is best. Make sure to give your yorkie plenty of attention, so there is no jealousy! Don't stress because your pup will feel you stress....enjoy your twins! I have twins granddaughters, too! |
Thank you all so very much for the great advice and well wishes!! i don't have an ex-pen, but Pepper has his own bedroom:animal36...i know it sounds crazy lol. I put a baby gate at his door and he watches all the action. |
