Went to the dog park today... So disappointed in the people with yorkies. Walking them on a collar and leash one of them was 3.5 pounds full grown. Just makes me sad that the don't bother to learn more :(. And all the people who had their 12-13 week old puppies there....ugh. |
It is very sad... I've seen several yorkies walked on collars, but I make sure to mention something to their owners. Some people just don't know... |
oh I know what you mean!!! I went to "puppy training class" with my dd and the people next to us were giving their puppy HAM :eek:as a treat. I about fell off my chair, my dd gave me the "look" that said be quite! |
Yeah I did say something to the one people. Some people just have no clue. I just didn't realize how many lol. |
I've seen this also. I go out of my way to say hi and let them know that a harness is what should be used for Yorkies, because of collapsing trachea. I have found these people didn't seem to know how serious walking them on just a collar could be. I even saw a guy in a pet store and let him know also. He went right over and starting looking at harnesses. I guess some people have no clue. It's a shame the poor animal has to pay the price. :( |
That is so sad |
Before finding YT, I didn't know. There are so many that don't. All we can do, as educated owners, is help to spread what we learn. Don't lecture, but just be nice, introduce yourself, talk about your littles and let them know about the hazards of collars and benefits of harnesses. Most would be receptive, I think :) |
I bypass the little dog part of the park. |
Yes I do exactly that introduce myself and let them know most are but one lady with an older yorkie was like I've had him for years and he's just fine. I just said ok I was just letting you know have a nice day....lol. |
Yeah, there are definitely going to be those that "had for years...know what I'm doing...pup is fine.." We just have to nod, smile, know we did our part and remember that most moms and dads will want what's best. You did the exact same thing I would've done. |
it is often hard to keep ones mouth shut, I was at a pet friendly out door mall and was talking to a man with a very tiny chi, he had a collar on the dog but was holding him, he said it was puppy. somehow I got on the conversation of a harness and he said oh I never used a harness, none on my other dogs needed one and I hope I can get him to the point that he can walk without the leash:eek::eek: |
I didn't know that collars were bad for yorkies :( I've been to the vet with my two dogs in collars and she never said anything.. Is it better to not use it at all? (even though i have a teapot yorkie) |

Collars really should only be used for the pups tags, never for walking. Choke Free harnesses and Buddy Belts are both excellent....so much so that I got Harry's imported! Good luck! Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
