good idea? bad idea? why? ok this might seem a little weird but I didn't really find anything on it when I searched... Have any of you cotton coat people tried a deep protein treatment on your dog? Did it help? I realize you don't generally want to use human products on them, but I've been reading about using gelatin as a Pt for people and it seems like that would be safe enough. Yumi doesn't seem to have any trouble with matting, but my sisters morkie is a nightmare on top of which my sister is terribly absent minded so I doubt she gets brushed as often as she should. I end up dematting poor liloo every time she comes to play. I'm kind of hoping for something I can do when I have her that will last a little while. My understanding is that they get rats so easily because of how thin the hair is, I would guess it would also be fairly porous making the hair shafts rougher making the mats harder to get out. It seems like it might help to me... any thoughts? Do they make anything like that especially for dogs? |
My pups don't ave a cotton coat. Mine have the silky coat. I used Minksheen shampoo and Pantene conditioner and it really helped the mats on my girls coats. Hopefully someone who does have a cotton coat can answer this for you. |
Sophie is a cotton coat but she never mats. I brush her regularly with Yorkie Sheen sprayed on her brush. I use Yorkie Splash and Shine products. I also keep her in a puppy cut so her hair doesn't grow long and that probably helps her stay mat free also. |
From what I've read, it's okay to use people conditioner (like Pantene, as mentioned above - I've used Tresemme, too). But I think on the shampoo, it's best to find something that will work from the doggie products. It has something to do with different Ph levels. There are deep cleansing dog shampoos out there. Talk to Jenny (mimimomo) at toplinepet.com - I've seen a deep cleaning one there before but can't remember which brand it was. |
It's really hard to keep a cottony soft coated dog in a longer coat...they mat very easily. If you keep their hair longer, they need to be brushed @ least once or twice a day, but there still will be tangles. If these little tangles are not worked out b4 a bath, the water will shrink the tangle & then they will become a tighter tangled mass. If this is not resolved & the dog continues to be bathed & not brushed, it will then get tighter & form a tight mass of matts close to the skin. Ultimately, they need to be shaved down. The owner needs to decide, keep them in a puppy/shorter cut or devote their time in grooming/brushing & caring for their hair. Ok, w/that said, using a very good conditioning shampoo & a heavy conditioner once a week is imperative. Keeping the conditioner on them for at least 5 mins is best before completely rinsing it out. I wrap mine in a warmed towel, bc they will shiver & get cold. It should help keep them soft & fluffy for days. Daily brushing w/the Madan brush & comb along w/a good detangling/conditioning spray keeps the mats away!:D Thanks Terri for linking my site!:) |
I used Key West Aloe Doggie Shampoo on Max. He had a really thick cotton coat. It kept his hair tangle free and super soft, shiny, and smells amazing. He loved it. It conditioned his hair very nicely :) I would definitely recommend it. |
Angel is a Coton de Tulear and there is no coat that is more cotton! Very different than any other coat I have worked with. There is a deep doggy conditioner. Spectrum Ten HyproPac Intensive Treatment Show Dog and Cat Professional Shampoos & Conditioners You can also get a sample set of the Spectrum Ten but it doesn't include the deep conditioner but the other stuff is great too. Chris Christensen System Kits - Cherrybrook I am also a HUGE fan of this comb in the 7.5" coarse/fine Chris Christensen Buttercombs - Cherrybrook I like his Ice/Ice spray but I like this one better for Angel. EZ Groom Ruff Out Finishing Spray - Ready To Use - Cherrybrook And for working on the mats there is nothing that beats Cowboy Magic.  Amazon.com: Cowboy Magic Detangler 4oz: Sports &... Also, Coton groomers say you should always finish with a boar bristle brush to smooth down the cuticle to help with future tangles. I got a great one on EBay for a reasonable cost. Keep an extra eye on the hair between pads as it can mat up and cause problems. Good luck! |
Thanks for the replies. Shes getting a little fluffy but shes not got terribly long fur. Shes staying the night tonight and going to the groomer tomorrow. I usually only have her about once a week. That's why I was hoping I could deep treat her or something. Should the conditioner be more moisturizing or more of a protein type of thing? If I can use human conditioner I have both high protein and high moisture sitting in the bathroom. I'm not sure what to try lol on Yumi I just use the biogroom puppy shampoo and the silk conditioner and have no real problems. I think my sister have the same conditioner as I do but the whitening shampoo. |
I think Joeys is a cotton coat and he doesnt get too mant mats. I brush him daily, and when I notice one forming (under his arm pits and his thunder thighs) I make sure to work it out with some detangler. |
I use hair serum on mine, dime size on hand, rub hands and rub on fur, evertime i brush. i also use a leave in conditioner diluted 1:10 after every bath. After doing this for a couple months his fur does not mat as often and is silkier not as cotton candy. Plus I add salmon oil to breakfast. |
