Dangers of sago palm plants to pets I would like to start a thread again about the dangers of sago palm plants. I lost my beloved three year old baby girl, Roxie, to this terrible plant back in January after she ate one of the seeds. The death from cycasin, which is the poison in this plant is a very bad one. Even with extremely agressive (and expensive) medical treatment, my baby girl still passed away in less than four days. It is the most heartbreaking, gutwrenching thing I have been through in a long, long time. Please be aware there is not one part of this plant that is not poison. I have attached a link I found just this week regarding this plant. Please, please keep your pets safe. The seeds come off in December, January and February from what I have read, but could be anywhere, anytime. I will also include a picture so everyone can identify the plant. They are used alot here in the south for landscaping and are now being sold as houseplants. PLEASE BEWARE! I WISH I HAD KNOWN AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT OF MY YARD AND MY ROXIE WOULD STILL BE WITH ME. You must protect your pet against sago palms - Dara Johns - Northwest Florida Daily News |
Pic of Sago Palm Plant Here is a picture of this hateful thing so you can identify it. They should be outlawed in my opinion, but the horticulture industry has strong lobbyists is what I was told when I e-mailed the USDA Poison Plant Division. Thank you for this information. Sorry for your loss. |
1 Attachment(s) Sorry for the loss of your baby girl. Sago Palms are very toxic, we pulled up a huge one that was in our back yard. When we walk, I steer the pups away from yards that have them close to the sidewalk. |
Oh no. I am terribly sorry for your loss. Its great that your educating other moms on YT. Again, I am sorry for you loss. RIP Roxie. |
Thank you Thank you all. The only thing that I can do at this point (other than having dug up the one in our backyard, actually my hubby did), is to try and educate others. I only wish I had run across something about it, somewhere, sometime. "If" is a huge word, though and there is no going back now. I do want to let others know so that no pet will have to suffer like Roxie did or that no family will have to suffer such as we have. My male yorkie, Bear, is still grieving for her at times I think. It may sound crazy, but sometimes I can tell that he is. It seems he has a faraway look in his eyes. Please pass this on to anyone you know that has these wicked plants. We had ours for fifteen years and no problem, but then there was that one incident and unfortunately that is all it takes. The seeds are the most poisonous and I still worry that there might be one in our yard or a squirrel could bring one from somewhere else. I have heard of that, too. |
