Hello from a Yorkie Owner in Durban South Africa Hi Everyone, I am a new member to the forum. My name is Heather and I have two little yorkie boys, Max and Riley. They come from different litters but were born two days apart. (same breeder) Dynique who is a breeder in Hillcrest, Durban, South Africa. What a joy Max and Riley have been! They are almost five months old! They are as intelligent as anything but I am having such a battle getting them to do their business either on the paper laid down in each room or outside. Would love some advice on this issue as I have tried all the store bought products to discourage them just doing their business everywhere. Go outside with them on a regular basis. Not winning I am afraid. I look forward to hearing from you. :animal-pa |
Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! :) |
hello Heather, Melanie from Port Elizabeth. Welcome to YT. I have 2 pups Ruffy and Abbey |
Hello Heather, Max and Riley! Welcome to Y.T. nice to see a new member! |
Thank you for your welcome! |
Welcome to yorkietalk! Are you praising them and giving them a treat every time they go potty where they are supposed to? I would also get a play pen and keep them confined to a smaller area. Make sure you taking them to there potty maybe every one or two hours and trying to get them to potty. Sometimes teaching them outside and on paper is difficult and you may just want to focus on one. |
Hi Heather! Welcome to YT! Would love to see pics of your guys :) As for the training, Yorkies are notoriously hard to potty train. I thought I had Mandie trained really early and I used to brag about it..then she fooled me. She even regressed a couple of times. I think the best thing to do is to start from square 1 with them. Crate training would be a good idea for their ages. |
Hello and welcome to YT |
Hi there. . . Welcome to YT. It is very difficult to potty train a yorkie. It took me a full year to potty train my yorkie baby. I kept her in a play pen when I was at school and at night when I was sleeping with her newspaper, her food, toys and bed. And when I was at home she will run around in the house and play. Then I will take her where I wanted her to potty every one to two hours and praise and praise if she potty. Now she is one years old and can sleep with me in my bed and do not have to stay in the play pen. She does have an accident once in a while but we getting there. I hope I helped. :) |
Greetings Heather, welcome to YorkieTalk :welcome4: Yea, our guys are sorta hard to train, but I've had it pretty easy, in that I have two Adult Dogs, which help train my new Puppy Ichabod. Yorkies are basically very tidy guys. They prefer not to potty where they live. When Ickey did it in the wrong place, I cleaned the area, de-scented it as well, then lay a couple tasty Treats close, where he started associating that place with "Living area" not "Potty Area". It just so happens that I have a very secure back yard and a Doggy Door for my guys to access it. Ickey has learned that the "right" area for potty is very accessible (that being outside). |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! We hope you are enjoying it here on YT. I think being consistent with potty breaks is key. Make sure they go out shortly after they eat. If they have a favorite spot to go potty, take them there. It does take awhile. I trained Calleigh to go on the pad and outdoors. She uses the pad when it's raining. She's a fair weather potty goer. :) I'm sure you get frustrated. They will learn. I should imagine it is harder training two dogs at the same time. Know that you are not alone. You can vent on here any time. |
My DH and I were getting frustrated trying to potty train Princess Sophie and someone suggested tethering her to me. We have done this and it is very, very effective!! She's just now 4 months old and with her tethered, she has to go everywhere I go in the house and I can easily tell when she needs to potty, between regular potty breaks. It's a good idea that has worked out successfully for us to date. Now if she has an accident, it's our fault not hers. LOL Good luck!! |
