Stop the Jumping! Question -how in the heck do you go about keeping a Yorkie from jumping on and off furniture? I mean, even with steps to assist, Mandie just jumps over them or goes around them to jump. I want to stop her because she plays soooo much that she jumps an obscene amount. I have to find a way to stop it. Others seem to be so good at this stuff...can you give me tips or advice? TIA! |
I put them back up and make them walk down the stairs. Keylo will jump off the couch onto her bed and ill take her say stairs only and make her walk down them. in the beginning it took me doing it a few times in a row but then she got the hang of what i was asking for. this has worked and she only does it in high play time now so i think she just needs a reminder cause shes too focused on play. |
Good question I have steps for most of my couches and my bed. Brandi uses the steps 100% of the time when going up but not for going down especially the bed. I'm not to concern with the couches as they are fairly low but the bed is another story. She will use them about 50% of the time for getting down. I don't have an answer except to ban her from my bedroom but I would never hear the end of her whining and barking to get up on "her bed". I tried to correct her whenever I catch her doing it. I pick her and place her in front of her steps and say "steps" and she will go down. She will do this for a few days then go back to jumping off the bed.:( I haven't found a permanent solution. I think she just forgets to use them so I constantly have to remind her or I could be confusing her as I am not as strict with the couches. Maybe i should be enforcing that she use the steps with the couches as well???? I'm sure someone on YT will give us some excellent advice. |
I just don't know how I would go about enforcing that, ya know? When she is in full force play mode with her brother (playing keep away and/or chase) and especially when "daddy's home" and she is super amped up - there's no stopping her. She jumps, runs, jumps, runs, spins, runs, jumps....I'd never catch her to be able to take her back and say "steps". LOL! Maybe I need to get flooring made of trampalene :D |
have you ever tried a ramp instead...i know there are many yt's who dont think steps are even a good idea and have ramps instead...just a thought. |
LOL Why do they do that with the steps??!! It drives me crazy! I have the steps for Peanut in our bedroom. He will put his 2 front legs on the bottom step then try to jump the other 2! I’m like seriously!!?? I have sat with him and tried to train him to go up each step, and he will do it while I am sitting there with treats, but then when it is up to him he will try to be superman and jump up all of them!! |

Does she know how to use the steps? You can easily teach a pup to use the steps with treats. How to stop her from playing? Don't know why you would want to! Pups play! If you don't want her playing on the furniture you could try to get her interested in a game of fetch or take her for a walk but puppies have to play somehow. |
I'd would be curious as to why some prefer ramps over steps. Anyone know why? If ramps are a better option I would certainly look more into it especially if my little one would use it to go down 100% of the time. |

Actually I read somewhere at least in regards to us humans anyway that living in a home with multiple floors is actually supposed to be healthy. I have to agree because it really sucks forgetting something on the 3rd floor and you are on the bottom floor. Who needs exercise when I run up and down those steps several times a day. |
Hannah was so small when I got her that I leaned couch pillows on the floor so she could get up and down from my office couch. After almost 2 months I am down to one long pillow. At home last night she used a pillow that another dog pushed on the floor to access the couch. My bed is so high up that she's not on it w/o supervision but I may look for a large decorative pillow for her to use. I can always throw them on the couch or bed when Hannah is not using them..... This has been working for us since the beginning. |
Alright, so I have two options to try - a ramp and a decrative pillow. I like both ideas a lot. My question is - how do you get your Yorkie to use those? Mandie will simply go to another spot of the bed or couch and get down to bypass the stairs/ramps/pillow/obstacle. LOL I am really seriously considering that flooring idea I had earlier ;) |
Sometimes I wish Brandi had the grace and agility of my cat then I wouldn't have so worry about this so much. My cat makes Brandi look like a bull in a glass store. My cat is 13 yrs and is remarkably agile. She can still jump on the top of my kitchen cabinets with no problems. |
Try the pillow thing with the couch first and see if she likes it before you invest in anything else. Hannah depends on the pillow to get up because she is too small to jump that high. Since you posted this subject...Now I will be observing her to see why she makes the decision to use a pillow to get down or just take the high dive which she has been doing more of in the past couple of days. (Soon she will probably be jumping up on the couch instead of using the pillows) Have you tried putting snacks on the stairs? Maybe a day or 2 of placing snacks there and there only would get the job done. I'm no pro but am always open to give things a try. The ramp would be cheaper then the floor but then again I do like the floor idea. I will be checking back to see what others say about this so I can head off the problem before it gets started as I can see it coming very soon!!!:eek: |
I have stairs just because they take up less room. I have heavy set terriers so I don't want them jumping up on furniture either. It's bad for their shoulders. |
Ok, well I have plenty of pillows. I will start with those...maybe stick some treats on them. Oh wait - if I do that, my 70 lb Shelby might start using them LOL |
