Should I get rid of the play pan? Our Yorkie is 21 weeks old and I would say is 100% potty trained to go on the wee wee pads inside the apartment (last week has gone on the pad 100% of the time). We are considering getting rid of the play pan and just letting him roam around the living room, hallway, and kitchen (we live in a 1 bedroom apartment) when we are away. Now a days, when either of us is home, we open the play pan and he wonders around, plays, sleeps, and also urinates on the wee wee pads outside his play pan. Folding the play pan would save a lot of space in our living room. He does not have access to our bedroom yet. He does not whine at night, does not bark, does not have separation anxiety, does not bite, and listens to our commands. Thanks... |
sure give it a go...and if it is too soon you can bring it back out!! sounds like hes a really good boy!! |
If you feel he will be ok without it then go for it.. You can always give him a trial run and if has some accidents you can bring it back out. |
Is he in the play pen when you are away from home? For Max, his xpen was his "safe" place. We used it for about a year. If you take away the play pen, I would make sure your pup has a place he considers his safe place, maybe like an open crate or a pup tent. |
Just be aware he might have a fit if he has freedom and then goes back in the playpen lol, that's what Joel did when we were staying in a hotel I thought he could roam since the room was puppy proof and when we got back home he did not like the playpen, haha:D |
It sounds like hes ready for more freedom I would give it to him gradually like one room at a time |

what about all the other hazards that are in a house. Low electrical cords, low shelves with stuff on them that they could reach and chew away on...My Emy just turned 1 year old and I still don't trust her loose in the house. she destroys everything, from chewing on the rug, chewing on table leg, destroying her toys, chewing pee pad in the center...it goes on and on...if I don't watch her all the time she would really be in trouble with something... |

I say give it a try, see how things go but dont get rid of it. You may end up needing it. Normally pups are not 100% trust worthy (potty, chewing and all) until bout 8-10 months old. Good Luck ! |

My is potty trained but still keep teddy in confined area while not home so he doesn't get into things, I mean they are still puppies and have lots of energy to burn |
I would make sure that he is out of a chewing phase and that everything is puppy proofed. I would not get rid of the play pen just simply put it up because you would be surprised how many times and for how many things it can come in handy for :) |
In my opinion he is too young to be out when you are not home. I think it is fine that he can wander about when you are there but it worries me for a full day.. he is still a puppy. I kept a play pen for almost a year with my guys. Also, if he is used to sleeping in the play pen at night he may become confused and then he will whine. He needs a "place".. like kristen said a safe place. Good luck and keep us posted |

Play Pen? You sure are a trusting Mom and he must really be a good boy but I agree with everyone else. Hold on to your pen! Store it for the future! When I let Hannah rome free I sneek watch her from the outside doors and windows. She's a totally different pup when she thinks I'm not looking!! |
I would say to give it a go! Also, can you please fly your baby to me? Sounds like you have the perfect little puppy :) My two are adults and still aren't as well trained as your little guy sounds :p I'll be waiting! lol |

Since he has limited space in your small apartment I would say it is safe to put away the play pen. Dogs his age usually cannot be trusted to roam a large area but your home sounds small enough that he can handle it. He is not using the pen anyway. Sometimes they may go off training a bit every now and then and if that happens you can get the pen out again. My Gracie was very easily trained to pee pads. She was really used to using the pads when I got her. She went off training and had some accidents when she was around 10 months old but it only took a couple of days to get her back on track. She actually had problems when my daughter moved out. I guess it was some kind of emotional response. |

It always amazes me the tiny places that Harry can get into, even though he's a 'big boy' :D And electrical wires were always my biggest worry...we can clear up pees and poops....
