Need Help With Ears Hi, I know that this question has probably been on before, but I can't seem to find an answer. My Baxter is 11 weeks old and has floppy ears. He has quite a bit of hair on ears, do I need to trim them to get them to stand up? Does the weight of hair really affect ears or is it something that either they will or wont, even if you trim? Thanks for any input and everyone have a Merry Christmas for Baxter and me. |
Anyone out there with any advice? Was thinking of trying to get into groomer, want to know if I need to do this. Thanks one and all for any help with this question. |
1 Attachment(s) Yes the weight can keep them drooping over - Some yorkies ears never stand - or one does and one doesn't but I would shave down the top 1/3 of the ear - inside AND outside - It's really easy to do - I use a Wahl trimmer - you can get one at Sally Beauty Supple for about 10 $ - just hold the ear FLAT against your thumb - or whatever is comfortable and shave UPWARDS - in the direction the hair grows - Do NOT shave edges - the teeth in the trimmer will gouge the ear edge.....so you want to just shave against the FLAT part of the ear...It sounds harder than it is - the idea is to keep them from wiggling and it can help if you wrap your baby in a towel to keep the squirming to a minimum and shave FAST...it gets easier after you do it a few times - and GOOD Luck ! If you want to have ears standing up , you'll have to shave them . |

Thanks so much for the info and pictures. I have a cocker that I took to a groomer at a very young age, so as not to be scared and he loves her. I just don't want to do anything that will scare my little Baxter too much. I like you way, it should be quick and not bother him. Thanks so much and I think your dogs are just the cutest sweeties. if they are way down and not up yet I would suggest doing the whole ear inside and out the best you can. Shave like Villette said and shave it bald as you can. Be careful of edges. It's better if you are nervous to strt in he middle of ear and swoop out to make sure you don't nip edges. if you take the ear between your fingers and use your finger nails to guard the edge you can use saftey rounded baby scissors to trim close around the edges. It is also good to be near bright light aNd YOU CAN SEE THE EDGES BETTER. Also you might want to tape them. get some medical tape from the drug store for this. You hold the ear flat and up and tape around each ear flat , then you connect them TOGETHER to pull them UP straight by taping them together so it looks like ou have a bar between the ears. THIS WORKS BEST using medical tape that won't pull the hair to much and SHAVING as much of the hair off before hand as possible. OH... some people fold the ears in half like an upright sandwich first before wrapping but it is a matter of preference it seems. :) |
If you shave the ears does it make them look larger or smaller,on mine the ears stand up fine,but they also have long hair inside and out, I pluck the hair out of the inside like the vet showed me,yet now I am wondering what I should do for looks |

Personally I liked the shaved ear look. AND it grows back fast if you do it and don't like it :p |
