Silly feelings Hi everyone - I want to get a playmate for my little Priscilla ... she is 5 1/2 now and I don't know if it will be a good thing for her or a nightmare ... she is not really good with other dogs ... but she is great with people ... My husband and I work a lot and Priscilla stay home alone during the week for about 9 hours a day - she handles well ... for a while we had a dog walker but ever since the dog walker had an accident with Priscilla and she was force to get surgery I never had a dog walker again - and i will never have one again no matter how good they are they will never be as careful as we are ... Anyway - I feel guilty about bringing a playmate bc I feel like I am going to make Priscilla jealous and she will be upset with me :confused: Is this a siily feeling? any of you feel or felt like that ? I can totally relate and I don't think it's silly at all! I think the same things with Georgie. His boxer sister passed away in August of last year and aside from furry cousins he has no playmates. He is a lot like Priscilla not a fan of his kind (aka dogs) lol. I think since she is home alone it might be good to have a playmate. I work from home a lot so Georgie isn't home much by himself. |
Not silly at all. We too wanted a playmate for Sophie so we got Hazel. Hazel however turned out to be a bully and we felt bad for Sophie so we ended up giving Hazel to our niece where she could be the only child :rolleyes: It didn't work for us but many yters have two or more dogs and it works very well for them. I guess it would depend on their personalities. |

A lot of times i don't go out because I feel bad to leave her alone during the weekends ... Maybe the playmate is for me to feel better ... I hate to think she is alone :'( but we have to work so it is what it is ... |
If you thought that she wouldn't get along with another dog, maybe a kitten? Lola loved her husky but no other dogs. However, I didn't like them together when I wasn.'t there to supervise. She did however adore cats and so Keno and Felix were her snuggle buddies and playmates when she was alive. Now I find Ruby playing with the cats just as much if not more then Rosie. |
Have you tried her around male dogs? Laddy is not good with other male dogs but does great with females. When Lolita passed Laddy was so lost without her. We are home with ours most of the time but they enjoy each other so much. |
Not silly. Your girl could hate having a packmate or dearly love it. My Jilly simply refused to accept a puppy I got her as a playmate - one that grew larger than she and kept harassing her and she went on a hunger strike, lost hair, chewed her ankles and wouldn't leave the top of the back of the couch. She got quite thin before I rehomed the puppy and then she returned to her normal life, gained weight, hair and stopped OCD chewing her ankles. My Tibbe on the other hand would likely overpower another dog with unending love and play. Just go with what you think will be best for your dog and if you get it wrong, with a Yorkie, while it is far from ideal, it is possible to, in time, find a wonderful situation if you need to rehome a young puppy. An older second dog might not accept the two home changes in a short time as well as a puppy will, so consider the situation of any second dog you might choose to get. It could seriously psychologically set back the fragile psyche of an older dog to have to be rehomed again soon if your dog doesn't accept him or her. |
If you are going to get another one your pup is at a good age to do it. She is still young and probably willing to accept another pup. If she is generally good with other dogs then you will probably not have problems with a new one. Of course there is not guarantee. They are all different but if the pup is well socialized and you know the parents have a good background you will improve your chances of getting a well balanced pup that will fit right into your family. Being alone for that length of time must be boring for your little girl and she may be less needy when you get home if she has a playmate. |
