Lepto vaccine question... When I was at the vets on Saturday, we were discussing vaccinations for Tatiana. I have never given my yorkies the Lepto vaccine. :( Our vet was saying that there has been 2 cases of it in the area. He is now recommending it for adult dogs to get beginining at 1 yr and older. He isn't recommending it for puppies. What is Lepto? Should I worry about it with my pups? He said there is a new version of it and it is safer for yorkies. Anyone know about this? |
Leptospirosis - This is a bacterial disease transmitted through urine of infected animals. It infects the kidneys and causes weakness, vomiting, high fever and loss of appetite.The vaccine does not cover all strains of Lepto. Early treatment with antibiotics or a combination of antibiotics usually results in good prognosis. Lepto can be transmissible to humans. If you are in a location where your animals may come into contact with such animal as raccoons, opossum, skunks or rats it is recommended that you get them vaccinated against the Lepto virus. I have my dogs treated every spring. I would rather treat against it rather than have then infected and go through the process of treating it after the fact. Im my eyes prevention is the best policy. |
I just read about it being transferred by rats, raccoons and stray animals. Since we live in a rural area and by a creek, I will have them vaccinated when they are a year old! I hope the new vaccine is safe for small yorkies. That is my fear of them having a reaction. |

My mom had a goat die of it so I get it. If you do get it though I would get the vet to give your dog benadryl and stay around the vets office for an hour after getting it. |

It is really a matter of deciding if the risk of serious complications is higher with the disease or the vaccine. Have you checked to see what the closest vet school is doing? It is definitely controversial because of risk, not covering all stains, not being effective for long, etc. I would put a lot of thought into it gefore giving it to a tiny doggie. |
I had Jack to the vets last week and he received the Lepto vaccine for the first time. I too was worried because of the negativity it had received in the past. My vet told me that the new vaccine is made with the dead virus (apparently the older vaccine was made with the live virus and therefore there were many more complications). Jack did fine and yes, even though we live in the "city" we have our share of skunks, deer, raccoons, moles, mice, opossum, squirrels, coyotes and even had a black bear roaming in the area last year. So I would rather err on the side of caution and have them vaccinated, especially since I learned it can be transmitted to humans. That is kind of scary. I was very watchful over Jack when he received his vaccine and he does have to go back in a few weeks for a "booster." We had to wait for Jack's heart worm test results to come back, so we were there in the office for about 15 - 20 minutes after the vaccine was administered and I do believe that is a good idea (to hang around, just in case of a reaction). But again, my vet said they very rarely see any reactions with the new vaccine. Good luck to you! |
My dog's do not get it. My late Lizzie almost died from the shot, she had such a horrible reaction. I would say if you are going to get it, make sure they take some benedryl before, to help with possible reactions. |
I don't give it. We live in a high risk area. I do core vaccines only. |

Alice ... reacts poorly to vaccines... she gets sick/lethargic/ extreme soreness at injection site etc.. so i only do the required ones.. and i spread them out to see which ones she reacts to. :-/ |
