Yorkies and liver problems Hi everyone! I'm totally new at this, so please bear with me. I acquired an 8 week old toy Yorkie last year after my daughter received for Christmas. Little did I know at the time that she would become my absolute best friend! Anyway, to make a long story short[er}, right before her first birthday, she had a seizure. Took her to the vet e.r. and vet took a blood sample, citing slightly elevated bile acids. She told me about Yorkies having problems with their livers and "shunts". Took her to another vet in the morning and they too said she had elevated liver enzymes and gave me Lactulose syrup to give her twice a day. Several months went by and she started vomiting. Took her back to the vet and this time they put her on Baytril, and antibiotic for a month. Just wondering if anyone has had the same experience and what was the solution? |
hi!! First, welcome to Yorkietalk! :) Second....I can't offer any advice but I am "bumping" this post to the top so maybe someone else will see and be able to help. You posted in the general discussion section which moves prety fast. Im going to request this be moved to the Sick and Injured section. You'll get more responses that way. I'm so sorry your little angel is having these problems. I hope you get more help. |
Welcome to YT.:) Yes, it is common in yorkies. Lactulose is good to help prevent neuro symptoms cause by toxin buildup. There is a lot more to do here though. Your pup needs to see an internist for diagnosticimaging, other liver support supplements, possible diet change, and to consider surgery if it is a shunt. In other words, the vetdoes not seem to be taking this seriously enough. |
Thank you both for your replies.......still new at all of this, so bear with me!Trying to find a specialist in my area.I will keep you posted! Thanks again! |
