Puppy Growth Chart???
 
Looking for some sage advice on charting puppy growth.

Since Eva Noel was a complete surprise (Christmas gift), I've had to do a lot of research on this breed so I can 'raise her right'. ;)

In all of my research I continue to see these growth charts for Yorkie puppies.

The breeder (that my husband bought Eva from) said that she would mature between 4 1/2 to 5 lbs. Eva is 5 months old and weighs 3 1/2 lbs. If I am figuring these charts correctly, it does give her mature weight between 4 1/2 to 5 lbs.

My question to all of you seasoned breeders is this; are these charts accurate?

I'm not a seasoned breeder lol but I will say there have been lots of threads about the growth chart and it seems like you shouldn't put too much stock in them. Personally my girl followed it but for females I would give about a pound of wiggle room bc they may gain weight after their spay. Luma did. There could be late bloomers...the runt of the litter can end up the biggest, or a pup may decide to stop growing before they reach the weight they charted. The best weight indication would be what the dam and sire weighed. Do you know what the parents weighed?

My 8 week old that is still with her breeder has been charting to end up 5.5 lbs but I'm okay with her ending up a little bigger than that. :)

I think growth charts can be helpful to a breeder that is very familiar with the lines they are breeding and have a good history of what the dogs have produced in the past. When you have a pup that has multiple lines behind it with a big gene pool then a chart is not a whole lot of help in trying to determine the eventual size at maturity. Some pups grow slowly yet they will not come to full growth until a few months after the first birthday while others may grow fast at first and seem to peak at about 10 month. Those are just a few of the possibilities.

Maybe put off any major purchases that may be effected by the mature size of your pup until she is at least a year old. Truly I have lost count of the number of people on YT that were promised a dog that would not get larger than 4 1/2 lbs but ended up with much larger babies. I hope you are an exception but either way they are great pets.

Thank you for responding. How exciting to be anticipating the arrival of a new furbaby! Looking forward to photos when she arrives.

As for Eva's parents, according to the breeder, the sire weighs 4 1/2lbs, and the dam weighs 5 lbs.

Thanks for the advice. That's exactly what I was doing, trying to determine what her adult size would be before puchasing a few items! :)
