New puppy I just recently got a yorkie (female). I'm trying to house train her and get her on a schedule before I go back to work. She is 11 weeks old. She sleeps through out the day and night, eats well. Is is normal for her to sleep all the time? I want to crate train her but I don't like the sad look on her face when I leave her. |
Congrats on the new pup! When do you go back to work? Yorkies are notoriously difficult to potty train and 11 weeks is YOUNG. Crate training may feel "mean" but right now it is the best thing for her. It helps teach her to hold her bladder for longer- which in turn helps with faster potty training. Also, she is SAFE in her crate. When she gets a little older mayber put her in an exercise pen while you are at work. There are a lot of set up suggestions here on YT. But an ex-pen that can hold her crate, food, water, potty pad, and some toys seems to be the way to go- depending, of course, on how long she'll be alone. Welcome to YT! Hello and welcome to YT! I think at 11 weeks old, if you try to crate train her, you are going to come to a puppy who will need a bath. 11 weeks old is very young and her body is not fully devloped therefore she will be urinating a lot until she gets a bit older and can control those muscles. I would suggest putting her in an x-pen. Put her bed and food and water on one side and her potty training pads on the other side. Also, you want to make sure she has access to food throughout the day being this young. These little ones can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and go downhill really quick. Will you be able to come during your lunch to spend some time with her to make sure she is doing okay? |
I would go for a pen rather than a cage they have lots more space and easy to set up a toilet, sleep, play and feeding area this will cause less stress for both pup and you (cleaning wise) my little litter are 11 weeks old and although we have a few accidents mostly they pee outside in the garden and only use the pad in the pen while we are out. at this age they do seem to just sleep, pee, play, feed then pee again then back to sleep. Puppy Thanks!! I have move Lola out of my daughter's room and into the family room. I go back to work on 8 April, so I have time to train her and get her on a schedule. When I am home I let her run freely, is that wrong? When I put her in her play pen she starts to cry. I don't take her out but I will sit there and calm her down. I order a exercise pen for her so hopefully that she will have space. Any suggestions:confused: |

You've already received great advice so I don't really have anything to add but will tell you that Princess Sophie is 14 weeks old and we use a crate in her playpen. We leave the door to her crate open so she can use her potty pad and get to water and food. It works great for us. I'll post a pict. Right now she has pulled all her toys and blankie out of it to play. There are others here who have other setups so look around and they may have something you would like to use. Welcome again!!! |
I will be coming on for lunch some days and when I can't my husband will pick up. I did purchase a exercise pen so hopefully it will work out. |

Hi I let all of mine have the full run of the house also and only use the pen for safety reasons when we are not there to keep an eye on the little ones, the pen should come with the mesh top, we did have problems with the first pen I bought it had a Velcro base that the clever little pups worked out how to get under and escape so I re bought the same type of pen but this has a zip base and have had not problems since. as for the crying I do little test runs leaving them and building the time up from 10 mins upwards I find this works really well in making them feel happy you will return also I hide little bits of dry food under toys and in the bed, silly it's the same food that's in a dish but they love the hunt and keeps them busy from thinking of me leaving |
