I've noticed there seems to be a lot of nurses here. Are we wired to take care of others, both canine and human? Is it habit caring for others or do we need the unconditional love from our babies?

My theory is that wherever a lot of multi generational women gather, there are bound to be a lot of nurses. In my mother's day, if women even worked outside the home, they were either nurses or teachers. Nowadays many young women and men are going into healthcare for job security in an unstable economy. I'm proud to be an RN myself, in fact an ICU CCRN.

Been there, done that, got the tee shirt....35+ years cardiovascular intensive care, transplant team, ALL those neat abbreviations behind my RN...the one I am looking forward to the most now is "RETIRED"!!!!

That's fantastic! I've been an ICU nurse for 3 years now and can appreciate everything behind your statement. In fact, it's RNs like you with all your deep knowledge and experience that inspire me greatly. I know exactly how hard you've worked to save countless lives. I'm positive that retirement for you is hugely deserved!!

Telemetry Nurse here!! I def believe that we are hard wired to care for people and animals alike! Love the fact that on YT I'm in the company of nurses that luv their fur babies!!

I can proudly say that after many years of nursing I have that wonderful title of "Retired" now and loving it!

I'm an RN who will be getting her CNP in December at the ripe age of 59! Plan to work till I'm dead!!

i just yall ladies to know i am not a nurse i am in software education......but i am hoping my yorkie helps me score with nurses :) .......................or any women that will have a ninja stud like me :)

And I graciously step aside and let ALL the new generation of youngbloods, step up and grab the baton....you remember to develop your OWN self, your own sense of worth....you remember as an ICU nurse, you are agressive and you are a "first line" patient advocate. You learn your trade so you can stand strong between those that would not put the needs of the patient first, and that certainly includes any other staff. In order to stand solid against those people, you MUST know your "trade"....going up against residents can get you in a stickey wicket, if you are not absolutely certain of yourself and your knowledge base. Teaching hospitals are the BEST places to hone your skills...attendings are confident enough to respond to inquiring nurses with guidance and instruction, without getting all intimidated....Good luck to you and ALL the upcoming ladies that will one day, be MY nurse or my CRNA, or my NP or my PA! You better do everything in your power to know how to keep me alive!

I've been a nurse for 33 years now, 26 in the NICU. I've worked as a traveler fo about half that time and see a lot of very good young nurses coming up. And I am ready for them to take over. Unfortunately until recently I haven't stayed in one place long enough to retire yet. I am so ready to stay home with my fuzzbutts.

I am a nurse as well, 21years critical care and 6 yrs counseling HIV+ inmates.
I got my first pet ever (a Yorkie) Christmas 2012. His name is Micah and I have gone crazy over him! He is so smart! He can ring a doorbell to go outside and another to let me know he is ready to come in.

Are we all too old for floor nursing or did we just find our niche? I personally think floor nursing is for the young.

So many nurses here that I wasn't previously aware of! I'm always amazed how many nurses are on YT. My bach degree is in nursing...I went back to college mid-twenties and graduated in nursing at age 28. When I got out of school, I managed a clinic for about a year. Then, I went into bio-med (implantable pacers and defibs) with Medtronic, so I worked in the corporate world for about 8 years, moving up the ladder. And wow, lemme tell you fellow nurses - the corp world is a whole 'nother animal. Right now I'm not in nursing and I miss it, but I don't think I want to get back into nursing, per se. Maybe some other branch of healthcare, but I'm not sure what.

I too am a RN, not floor nursing anymore. In charge of a Pathology Nursing department, been doing that for 14years now. Been qualified for 28 years now. Go back to floor nursing, never gonna happen!

Nope...not a nurse...lol I'd personally think/guess, from my own experiences, that caring for and/or about people and/or animals is 'why' people might want also to get into such professions as nursing...not t'other way round. I could be wrong...;):p:D

Amen to that! My 1st 10 years were spend on the floor/telemetry...3 as a tech, 7 as a nurse. 7 more in SICU, now been In the ED for 8 years. Think I'm getting too old for that, too, and am back in SICU prn, too. When I grow up, though, I want to work with EMR systems and currently am on the team initiating an EMR at our little community hospital. Nod to Tntviper1...love the computer stuff! And yes, I think nurses are caretakers of not only our pets, but many of their husbands, too. Y'all know what I'm talking about...how many nurses do we know that are the sole breadwinner? I think my Huey takes care of me, though. He is my little furball of sanity that I come home to every day.

Thank you all for everything that you do and have done through your dedication to patients. It is a noble profession. You are appreciated! :thumbup::thumbup:.

I am also a newer nurse. Did Peds for a year but am now in NICU. I love my job and wouldn't trade it for anything. Am learning so much everyday.

:D:D Gives the phrase, "Pizz on you!" a whole new meaning!!! And to the CPhT, yes, you also get brownie points! You keep the world MOVING!!!! There are sooooo many areas of healthcare....each one of us finds our own niche, where we feel we have the most to contribute, and we all LOVE our work....We may get discouraged with WHERE we work, but we bounce back with unbridled enthusiasm when put in the right place, with the right docs, the right staff, managers, opportunities to learn and be heard, to make a change in the system, and have the most impact on our patients and their recovery....it is great! And as we get older, and we realize we have reached the fork in the road, where we have to let the "youngbloods" that are coming up behind us, step up and take over where we leave off, and we can be confident in their abilities to pull it off! You all learn your trade well....because WE are all going to be depending on YOU to keep us alive for as long as God intends!! YOU are going to be OUR advocates, standing up to doctors, as advocates for OUR well being! Dont let us down! I dont want to have to be laying in a hospital bed, worrying that the 22 year old resident is writing an order on that chart for medicine he thinks I need.....and he has the decimal in the WRONG place!!!! Please, I dont want to take my last breath, directing/teaching a doctor!!!! (I know all you ICU staff know EXACTLY what I am saying!!!!)

I admire nurses! I am a retired teacher (34yrs) and my daughter, Lisa got her BSN from SDSU. She is working in the New Grad program. She works the 12 hour night shift 7pm to 7am. Wants days. It is a very tough job, understaffed and demanding. She hasn't decided what area she likes yet. She has done 6 mts oncology and is now 6 mts on the orthopedic floor. No time for dating, just eat, sleep and work. Again, I have high regards for nurses. You must be the blessing to the sick and you work so hard. Thank-you for your dedication!

My son graduates HS this year and is going to college to be a nurse. He is not sure what specialty he is interested in but has plenty of time. I am in law enforcement and my DH is a paramedic, so I have a lot of respect for nurses and anyone in public service it is a thankless job.
