Storm Anxiety Do any of your dogs have this. Little Kyra has never reacted to storms until tonight. She was sleeping on my lap when the first thunder came and she started this horrible panting that went on until the storm quit. She was also shaking so bad :(. My heart almost stopped as this is how Lolita was when her heart got really bad. I was in tears thinking I needed to rush her to the vet when she finally calmed down. Any suggestions for the next time we get a storm? |
I know there's a lot of love for thundershirts. May want to give that a try. |
Thank you I think I may have to. It broke my heart watching her like that. I just don't understand why it took 16 months for her to become afraid of storms though. |
Some things just spark it... :( |
Yes my Jewels does it and it breaks my heart she seems so upset. I tried the thundershirt and it does not work for her but for others it has so its worth a try. They say you shouldnt coddle them when this happens but Im not going to let my little dog be in distress and not give her attention so I hold her and talk softly to her or let her lay by me she just wants to be beside me when the storms are going on. On another note we had a tornado warning for our area one time and I ended up turning the tv on and finding out because of the way Jewels was acting so its not alll bad |
I remember my Little Ampi used to do get really scared and shaky, bless her! Just act normal when that happens, try to distract her...give her a treat maybe |
My Willow has this problem. I have tried the Thunder Shirt with no luck. I do give her Rescue Remedy (the one for pet's) and it does take a little bit of the edge off, but she still paces back and forth and pants. Last night we had quite a few Thunder Storms. It just makes me so sad to watch her. She also doesn't like to be held during this time either. |
I would try a thundershirt and rescue remedy.I don't know if you give kongs but if she is a high treat motivator maybe keeping a kong w peanut butter in the freezer to give to her during storms might help some. Or maybe playing some classical music during the storm? ???? I would have a hard time also not coddling my babies if they were scared during a storm. |
I used to have a dog that had very strong storm anxiety issues. It is very stressful to deal with. He always wanted to sit on my lap when he was going through this. I would feel horrible if I was away from home when a storm blew in because I knew how terrified he would be. Gracie came to us in the summer time so storm season had already begun. Whenever there was a clap of thunder she would look at me and I would just pretend I did not hear it and did not notice her checking me out. They are very preceptive and see our reactions to everything. I have continued this behavior ever since and so far we have had no anxiety of any kind. I truly hope it stays this way. She will be 3 in May. She still checks me out when there is a storm and I still ignore the sound and her reaction. She just goes back to sleep or what ever she was doing. I hope this is not an indication of future problems. Hopefully she will be OK the next time you have a storm. |
I would recommend the Thundershirt also, I have one for Sophie Kate and it helps so much during the Southern storm season. Remember when you get the Thundershirt you want it to fit properly (they need to fit tightly). Good luck, I know how scary the anxiety can be . |
Thank you everyone for your responses. She finally was able to calm down and sleep through the night. It sure does make you feel helpless when they are in that state. I will be looking into trying the thundershirt and the Rescue remedy. I tried treats last night when it was going on to distract her but she just wasn't interested. |
The Thundershirt helped Teddy with his storm anxiety. We rarely have to put it on now. As others have said, it doesn't work for every dog, but I think it is worth a try. Others have had luck with a tight fitting piece of clothing. Similar concept. I turn on lights during storms and play fetch with my boys, or we do tricks for treats to distract Teddy. Always remain cheerful and upbeat. I know how upsetting it can be to see these little ones panicked. :( |

Callie did this during thunderstorms. I bought a thunder shirt and used it for one whole summer and it worked great. Then one storm I didn't get it on and she had no problems at all and it fixed her and now she doesn't have any fear of them. Thunder shirts website will let you return them if they don't work. |
Pixie started getting freaked out by thunder a couple of years ago at the age of 5. Have no idea why. Now even if it is raining she freaks out. It has been raining since yesterday. She has had her thunder shirt on and her natural calming medicine from the vet and is still shaking and panting. Some days the shirt works great other times not so much. She will be fine for a few hours and then shake and pant just hearing the rain on the house, even though it's been raining all along. I would give the thunder short a try it's money back gurantee. |
