Yorkie Toy Ownership Question I have a question for people who have two or more Yorkies I have two boys and for the most part they get along fine One is definitely the leader.... and the other is happy to follow .... but he'll stand up for what he wants for the most part But I feel bad because he never plays with doggie toys but I brought a new toy home the other day and I saw that he started playing with it That is until his brother got a hold of it .... now he won't touch it This makes me feel bad for him what should I do? |
When the one that is more assertive takes the toy from the submissive one take it back and give it back to the submissive one he will see your not going to allow the other one to take it away from him. My two are exactly like that and we have to allow separate play time with Jewels the submissive one or she will just allow Chachi to have the toy |
Thanx Jewels and Chachi .... we'll try that again But the thing is when I do that my Mike just looks at me  |
Most of the so-called experts who have handled many multiples of dogs for years say to leave pack hierarchy alone or it could destabilize the pack, cause insurrection and fighting. Usually members of a dog pack or dog family are happier when we appreciate their own natural, canine family structure over those we might want to insinuate on them as humanlike. If the pack is getting along as is and not fighting, I would let it be. With two terriers of the same gender, you can sometimes create problems when you try to usurp the leader or alpha member of the pack. If you want one dog to play with a toy the leader disagrees with, let the pack leader/alpha outside and allow the other dog to play with the toy. See if that works. Just be sensitive to the fact that as canines, they operate on a different social schematic than we do and to give a follower "place" or "standing" above what he's earned can get him hurt sometimes. |

We have had the exact same thing going on with our Gretel (who passed away last Dec.) and Hansel. Gretel was such a type A and poor Hansel has always played the baby in the family. He is very laid back and seems not to be bothered by much at all. Gretel on the other hand always had to be in on everything. Whenever we brought toys home (even two of the same toys) Gretel would manage to take them both and hoard them. Hansel never really had a chance. There were a couple toys that Hansel seemed to especially like, a pull rope, and a tennis ball, so we always got those to play with him and Gretel just had to find her own but when we weren't looking, she took toys away from Hansel and he would just look at us as if saying "Oh well...". I guess sometimes it just isn't worth the hassle to break that habit. We just made sure Hansel always got some special play time with us. Good luck, I don't know what to advise. |
Our one dog decides who can play and who cannot. It's the way their little family is set up. Everyone has his/her place. They all accept it and harmoniously exist. When I have interfered with any of their "communication" and rules, it ends up causing a dog fight. Let sleeping dogs lie or something like that. :) |
One thing that I forgot to tell you guys .... and this never fails to make me laugh and laugh Whenever I am getting ready to walk Mike and Zach of course Zach has to be first to get his lead and leash on But when I have him in my lap my Mike Runs around and barks ... and grabs the squeaky toy in question...as if to say Nyaah Nyaah you can't get me ... and this gets Zach SUPER upset .... he growls and growls It's a regular comedy show :animal36 |
Oh, that sounds so cute. Dogs are so good for what ails us with antics like that. They keep you laughing. :) :) :) |
