I have two yorkies a father and daughter. my female kc has been chewing everything furniture and the blinds i had hit her with the news paper and placed her in the cage but she still continues to chew on things while im at work what shall i do?:confused:

I see you didn't read up on how to train dogs. Never hit your dog with anything at all! I could give you lots of pointers, and I'm sure your going to get them here, but I strongly suggest you buy a training book.

First of all, please don't hit her! You could really hurt her and make her aggressive and fearful of people! A playpen and chew toys would help. Maybe someone to come in and play with her during the day or a doggie daycare, even. If she is a puppy, she sounds like she is bored and chewing on things that she should not. I am sure others will have suggestions for this problem!

Sounds to me like you need more puppy toys! LOL When they are little they seem to be all teeth. I hope you are not feeling defensive as it has been found that positive reinforcement works much better than punishment when training puppies. There are several books on the subject and it probably would benefit you and your puppy to check them out.

I'm sure you are wanting to all that you can to ensure that you have a friendly and sociable dog when your puppy is grown. With that said, if you find your puppy chewing on something they shouldn't, help her/him by giving her/him a toy to chew on. If you keep doing this, they will get the point. The most important thing is that you do this consistently so that every time you catch her/him, you give a chew toy instead. It may take a while but she/he will get the message and soon you will be on your way to better behavior.

I'm really glad that you are part of our YT community and that you asked this question because a lot of people don't really understand the Yorkie mind and training a small dog isn't what it used to be. When I was young, and we had a dog, all we knew was to swat them with a rolled up paper so every time she saw a rolled up paper she ran and hid. No need to do that now. There are so many easier/kinder methods to training our pups and that is really a good thing. Good luck and please let us know how your training goes. Blessings!!

i have learned a lot here, small dogs respond more to positive reinforcement and just simply replace the chewing behavior (item) with a bully stick or chew toy... i have learned very fast these dogs are smart.

i just tell Hermes NO, and give him the toy the chewing stopped in three days once he made the connection

She must be quite agile if she continues to chew on these things while in her crate. Welcome to YT. Hope you stay long enough to learn from the wonderful people here.

Do not used the bitter apple spray- My Yorkie loved it however I didn't love it- The only one it stopped from chewing on things was me- That stuff tastes awful!!!

Actually I went out and brought Teddy more chew toys- we got like 10 or 15 dog toys in our house-

How old is KC? If she's young and possibly teething this isn't unusual. Maybe she's bored and looking for some attention? My two 7 month olds have been chewing anything they can sink their little teeth into. They do their dirty work when I'm not watching so I blame myself, not them. They need to learn just like children need to learn. A firm no and giving her something appropriate to chew on will eventually sink in. Please be patient, it will get better.

I agree with the others. Her crate being used for punishment will make her be after aid of her crate. I have an ex pen. It works great. Do you make time to play with her. Tire her out a little. I would get more toys, get a couple of kongs. You can fill them and freeze. It will occupy her for a while. And if she is teething she will love the cold. I went and got a variety of different types of toys. They get bored with one type. Plays with another.

Don't ever hit your dog - it accomplishes the very opposite of what you're trying to do. Hitting a dog will create an anxious, confused, neurotic, scared, jittery, and cowering little dog....I wouldn't think that's what you're hoping for, is it?

Since you said you work...let's say you're at work, in your office - and you're doing whatever...just something, anything. Suddenly, a co-worker comes up and smacks you on the side of the head. Let me ask you, why did they do that? What were you doing wrong?

What, you don't know the answer? Well, neither does your dog when you do the same situation with her :p. See how hitting doesn't work, all around? Teaching and communicating works, hitting doesn't.

I'd suggest you buy 'The Loved Dog' by Tamar Geller. She teaches us what 'dog language' is/means, since dogs speak a language other than English.

Bitter apple spray worked for ours, but I know some dogs like the taste of it so you will have to experoment with that. Your dog needs something to chew on. You can find many things at petsmart that will keep your dog occupied while you are away. They have interactive toys that you can fill treats or a little peanut butter.

Hi there and welcome to YT! I just saw your pic of KC...she's adorable. I replied there about what helps with your situation. Make sure you don't hit (even lightly) because it truly does just bring out the scared terrier in them ok?
