Any experience with Bunnies and Yorkies??
 

Ok... I have been researching bunnies alot lately and I have become obsessed. I really want a little holland lop and I found an excellent breeder. She will have some bunny babies in the next few months.. so I am still in the deciding period.

However, I am concered. And as much as I want one, I am 99.9 percent sure Taycie will think I have gone senile:eek: And I am almost certain.. she will not approve of the new little friend. My biggest concern is.. she would scare the rabbit to death... Not really the idea I had in mind.

So.. now I am wondering if it is worth it. Taycie, of course, comes first. And.. I am not the type of person to get a pet and then decide it didn't work out so good riddens..

Any thoughts? Suggestions??

I have no experience with Yorkies and small pets. Bentley's housemate is a 12 pound grumpy cat that detests him. :yelrotflm

Just based on the research I did on Yorkies prior deciding to get one I think there could be a potential for problems. Everything I read on Yorkie interaction with other pets would lead me to believe rabbits would be among of problem animals. There were big cautions about what they referred to as small animals, hamsters, etc.

I would think that with general rabbit nature and movement especially as babies (had rabbits as a kid) that it could very well bring out a Yorkies ratting instincts. I'm guessing you plan to allow the rabbit to become an active member of the family, many rabbits can be trained like you would a cat or small dog, litter box and all.

Bentley is only 14 weeks old and I see he is a natural born killer already. Any of his floppy "non stuffed" stuffed animals I watch him grab at the head and then rotate his own body around the axis of the toy's neck as if he was trying to snap its neck. :eek:

Just my 2 cents worth. I'm sure someone somewhere has a mixture of dog/rabbit/small animal somewhere. Hopefully they will chime in. :D

PS: Yes lops and rabbits in general are a delight to own. :D My pair were called Brownie and Thumper.

I am so glad you asked! My grandkids got a lop for Christmas! Teeka and Lexi, the Lop, chase each other around, Lexi will jump over Teeka and hide under the couch! They played this game for a long time on Christmas Eve. Teeka did a lot of barking, which didn't seem to bother the bunny! Here are a couple of pictures of them playing!!! :)

Yes... I have read this.. and this is my major concern. This is mainly why, it makes me sad:( maybe the the timing is off.

No experience with Yorkie and Rabbits but am anxious to see some posts. I love Rabbits and would love to have one.

It is hard to see, but in the long narrow picture, they are chasing each other in a circle! Teeka has never tried to bite Lexi. She just wants to play.....they were about the same size at the time. We have a teddy bear hamster, and Teeka would love to "get" the hamster! I don't trust her, not to try and bite it! :eek:

My best friend has two bunnies who we visit on a regular basis with Jarvis. One of them (a larger one, I'm not sure of the breed) has really taken to him and they chase each other around and sleep under the sofa together. The other bunny doesn't seem to be scared but rather disinterested and keeps herself to herself when Jarvis is around.

I've seen him get really nasty with his toys and even a field mouse (!) and I can see he is born to do a job which he really enjoys doing, so I'm not sure how he would be around really small bunnies. These rabbits he has encountered weigh a heck of a lot more than him and are a good deal bigger and taller too, so maybe he daren't even think about it?

I would think it depends on the level of prey drive your yorkie has. Mine see rabbits in the wild all the time & totally couldn't care less. i think she'd do fine with a pet rabbit. A lot of the rabbits are even bigger than she is too. :)

I have a holland lop, my teddy chases her whenever they are near, I think he is just trying to play but the bunny does not like it, when she is in her cage he ignores her. Since the bunny is twice the size of teddy, I am sure he won't harm her, but I don't want her fearful si keep them seperate and put teddy in the x-pen, when I let the bunny out.

My yorkie acts like a bunny...does that count? Haha but seriously I used to have rabbits growing up and they can be great. But the pure bred kinds (just like yorkies) come with a lot of health complications that you might really want to look into. Holland Lops tend to run a little small as far as bunnies go (if I remember correctly). And different bunnies have different fear factors. I had a Rex that would have taken on a horse, but some of my other bunnies were really timid. So if you do get one look at the temperament with the litter mates. I don't know what your Yorkie is like, but mine would have made a great rat killer back in the day. She hunts and she attacks. It is a game to her, but I don't think I would trust her around a defenseless bunny. You would have to really believe in your dogs control. Rabbits aren't always the smartest and they can cower when they feel threatened. Which could result in a lot of pressure put on your poor bunny. I am not saying it can't be done. I mean clearly some people have had success. Why don't you try a play date with your baby and the bunny first before you take it home? Feel the situation out. It is like introducing a new dog into the mix. Let them meet before you commit and fall in love. Not only will it protect the bunny, but it will help protect you from a broken heart if things don't work out.

I have come to the conclusion that for now.. the bunny will have to wait. I know Taycie and I know she will not like the bunny in the slightest, she is true terrier through and through. I think all along I knew this in the back of my mind.

Maybe someday when I have a bigger apartment/house would be better. So for now.. I will spoil Taycie some more and by myself a stuffed animal! LOL!

I think it would depend on the bunny's size and personality as well as Taycie's.

I had a mini lop for several years. She got along great with my yorkies. However she was a fearless little rabbit, would even chase my cats. So the yorkies didn't look at her like prey (ran from her more often) but I still never left her unsupervised with them.
That being said, I also had chinchillas at the same time. I could not have the yorkies in the same room as the chinchillas at all because they would go for them every time. They would just go crazy insane anytime they saw the chinchillas running around.

I had a bunny when I was like 15- From what I remember no matter how clean the cage was- it was always so stinky. Rabbit urine is really strong, I guess it was stronger bc I had the cage in my room… He was super cute, he was a calico bunny- not sure what type but he was orange, black and white. I also trained him to lay on his back on my lap and I would rub his belly! He loved that!!

I would let him roam around my house and my Mom’s cats would go nuts!! They would just give him this look like “ just wait until she leaves you alone with us” LOL

He was too much for me and the smell was giving me headaches, so I found a rabbit breeder and gave him to her-

Now for Yorkies and Rabbits- Peanut loves rabbits, he loves to chase them!! Not sure what he would do if he caught one, LOL I would think you would be able to train Taycie to accept your new rabbit friend. It might take a lot of training since they were bred to hunt rats!!

I have a bunny and I have 2 Yorkies. They were curious at first and the bunny was too scared to move so they sniffed, then the bunny stomped his feet and they barked, then they went towards the bunny and it reared up at them and then all was peaceful. LOL It was so easy for them to learn to stay away from the bunny and the bunny could care less about them.

I kind of thought about getting a bunny not too long after I got Tibbe and have a time or two since but I'm so scared Tibbe would keep on going back for more until the bunny bit him or something. He's extremely persistent.

Taycie is the same way. She would have a complete fit. I think for now I will wait. I want to be smart about the decision and do what is best for Not only Taycie but the new bunny. If I had a spare room I think it would work out fine. I want it to be a great experience bringing in a new pet.. And since I'm feeling nervous maybe it's best to wait:)

My yorkies play with the grandkids rabbit and do great with it. They have it litter box trained so no mess :).
