Thinking of a Yorkie, Suggestions/Advice? (: Hello everyone! I'm really passionate about Yorkies and am seriously considering buying one. Would they be good in an apartment? Are they hypo-allergenic? Is it hard to take care of them? I'm open to any suggestions and/or advice! Would love to get lots! Thanks! Paulina |
i have major allergies and i can say mine never make me sneeze. they do require alot of upkeep imo. for instance they get a brush down and wash up every night, they do sleep in bed with us so they need to have clean bums. hehe. i believe they would be good in an apartment as long as well exercised and have toys and such. i wouldnt suggest being left alone for hours upon hours. be sure though you have a good breeder as you may find issues with the babies health if you are not careful whom you purchase from. good luck i hope you find the perfect baby for you. |
I live in a pretty small apartment with my BF and my girl does fine. She is alone for about 4 hours every day. I jog with her every morning so that when I leave her, she just sleeps the entire time we're gone. We are getting a second puppy next month. I'd say the biggest thing you will have to work at is potty training. Just be persistant and reward them when they do it right. Feed on a schedule. And when you first bring the puppy home try not to leave it alone for long periods of time because the puppy could have a hypoglycemia attack. Their blood sugar drops and they can have seizures or die. I'd find a good vet and see if they had any breeder suggestions as well as answer any questions you might have. You can also go to here to see a list of breeders referred by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (they have some Canadians too) Good luck! Are you a student? I was 19 when I joined YT looking for a puppy. It is possible but it can be a lot of work! Do your homework (on yorkies lol)!! There is a TON of great info here in older threads. |
Oh and WELCOME to Yorkietalk!!!! |
Is your apartment close to your nearest neighbor? A puppy left alone can make a lot of noise. If you are gone for several hours a day a yapping puppy could be a problem. There was a post on YT just a couple of weeks ago by a girl who said her BF was very allergic to their new Yorkie puppy. I was surprised that someone would react so soon to a puppy but apparently he did. Yorkies are terriers and they have very terrier like personalities. You might want to get one of the better books out about Yorkies and read it to see if that type of personality is for you. I have had dogs all my life but never a terrier until Gracie. I had about met my match with her. They can be very stubborn and sassy little spit fires. You really can't train them the same way as most dogs. Wish I had a heads up about that before I got her. I have heard that Yorkies for Dummies is a very good book. Gracie is a great little dog now....but she is not like most dogs. She thinks she can talk and she also thinks she runs the place! |

There are so many thing to consider when thinking about getting a puppy. One thing that I think should be at the top of that list of things to consider is do you have the time. You need to make sure that you have the time and can be there to provide proper training during those very critical early puppy and adolescent times in a young pups life. Because without that you will end up with a resistance on your hands with a stubborn and ill mannered/untrained pup. You will want to consider the amount of time that you will be away from home and have to leave the pup alone and unsupervised. Someone needs to be there to take care of the pup, to make sure he is safe, fed and trained properly. Plus I think my biggest think with apartment dogs/pups would be the yappy thing. I think that it is important for you to consider your neighbors. Especially if you will be gone for more than 4-5 hrs a day. Puppies do not like to be left along. Being alone during a critical time in a pups life can cause anxiety issues among other behavior problems. A young pup needs time to get use to their new surrounding after leaving their mamma and litter mates. It can be and usually is a very stressful time for a new pup. Not to mention your neighbors who are home to hear it. You have to consider the time and energy it takes to train a new pup. Training doesn't happen over night and each pup progresses at different levels. Some, do very well and than there are those pups who just can not handle to transition from being with mom & siblings to being alone and confused. So, weigh your option and if you have the time, effort and ability that it will take to care for and train a new pup than go for it. From my perspective I recommend doing some research. If you are passionate then educate yourself. I did research for a couple of years, joined Yorkietalk to get advice and information just like you are doing. I did a budget up checked out local vets and I have developed allergies to dogs since my first dog. They are an active highly social incredibly loving breed and each little bugger has its own awesome personality. I live in a one bedroom apartment, I didn't crate train but Teegy as a pup he was kept on an expen when I was at work. With persistence and a lot discipline they can be potty trained for outside. I have no pee pads in the house at all. The worst thing you can do is let them sleep with you because they take over your bed and somehow my two wee 5 pound dogs have managed to give me a wee strip of my double bed. I hope I didn't rabbit on too much. |
One more thing yorkies aren't yappy. They are chatty. My two only bark when they hear very loud noises coming from the other side of my door. Find a decent breeder. Again part of my YT experience and research, my breeder gave a 5 year health guarantee as she said that often health issues don't come to light usually until the dogs second or third year. Trying to think of as much as I can for ya. |
