New Yorkie Mommy Hello, I am a new Yorkie owner. I have a 13 week Yorkie, very cute. He doesn't seem to be getting enough food. How much should I be giving him at each sitting (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)? Thank you :) |
WELCOME to YT and CONGRATS!! The piccie in your avatar is so cute. What makes you think he may not be getting enough food...he's not weak or lethargic or anything, is he? IF he is, you do need to go to the vet asap, okay? He does seem healthy...? At that age, I always fed 4x a day - and would just let them eat however much they wanted to. They're very tiny at that age, so it doesn't take much to fill them up. Also, if your pup is stressed / anxious since getting to his new home (not uncommon), go out and buy some Nutrical - it comes in a tube and is at Petsmart etc - it's a vitamin supplement that also provides some quick-absorb sugars and fat (and a bit of protein too, I think), if / when needed. When I first got my puppies, I'd always give them some Nutrical the first couple days after being home, AND before bedtime and when they woke up...just to give them a little boost, and a little back-up in case their blood sugar was a little low. |
Hi and welcome to YT! Yes, as Ann said..if he is acting like he has no energy, get him to a vet asap. Puppy Yorkies tend to get hypoglycemic and can go down hill super fast. Definitely keep some nutrical on hand (I always used to give it as a preventative thing...used it as a treat several times a day). Feeding a pup? I believe in free feeding..I don't think you can over feed a puppy. Just leave food out and he'll eat when hungry. Otherwise, go by weight and what is recommended on the bag. At 13 weeks, I would definitely feed more than 2 times a day so he doesn't get hypoglycemic. |
My vet asked us to feed Princess Sophie at least 4 and possibly 5 times per day at 8 weeks so we just free feed! She's growing like a weed!! |
I want my Puppies to eat any time they want. I leave Dry Food out for them 24/7 + Water, and supplement that with a Bowl of Goats Milk (only about 1/8 cup actually) a time or two a day. Also "treat" with Cesar's or Baby gooey food about the same frequency. Active Puppies are hungry Puppies... You can't just let them sit/lay around all day. Get um on a Leash/Harness, and take um out for some exercise. That'll get what's going in one end, out the other ! :D |

A hearty amen to this! I can really tell a difference in my guy's appetite if he hasn't been very active. When he gets a good energy burning play session in, he will eat like there's no tomorrow. On a slow, lazy day, he might only eat once, even though there's always food available. |
