Pet insurance..... With all of the health related issues that yorkies are more prone to encountering, i wanted to know if Health insurance for pets are worth the investment? Has anyone had a hard time getting it accepted? |
Sorry I have not got pet insurance yet. I am still looking at it |
I got health insurance for the first time when we got our youngest fur, Pfeiffer. It is super affordable to get it when they're pups and for us, it was WAY worth it. We got PetPlan for her. I have some basic coverage for Marcel, but I'm not sure I'll keep it bc now that he's 6...the premium is almost not worth it, even though he's had no claims. For Wylie, our oldest, he has WAY too many pre-existing conditions to make it worth it. I think it's an excellent idea to get for puppies, right when you get them. That way..even if you only keep it for the first 2 years - you'd be covered for anything major that was revealed within the first 2 years. That said, you NEED to make sure whether there are exclusions in any coverage that is specific to yorkies! Here is a thread that a helpful read (though not totally current info): http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...rifaj-dvm.html |
We, like Ann, have Petplan. I insured Cissy as soon as I got her & then added Bodie when he came home. It's been a life saver when he had LP surgery and again with HGE. The insurance company is each individuals choice but obtaining insurance has been a good option for us and well worth the cost |
I just got VPI for teddy we got the premium because it included hereditary conditions about $30/month |
We have Trupanion, it's around $30 a month, deductible is $300, we hit the deductible in January, so it will definitely pay off this year. So far, they've paid within a week of submitting the clain. Too bad we didn't get it immediately upon purchasing P-Nut as his FHO surgeries were expensive and Trupanion will cover hereditary conditions. Next pup we get will have insurance as soon as we get him home! I definitely think it's worth it. |
We have Healthy Paws and it's been worth it for Sophia! We pay about 35 a month for each dog (100 dollar deductable for each). It also gives me peace of mind! |
I have it on my 3. I have paid more in premiums than I have gotten back I'm sure but I am afraid to cancel it just in case. I was thinking of it and then Roxie got sick this week and it will help offset some of her bills. I have VPI but they didn't cover hereditary conditions and unfortunately both Cali and Pixie had major bills for genetic conditions. If I ever get another one I would find an insurance that cover genetic/hereditary conditions. |
I have Trupanion. And I LOVE it! In October, Taycie was in the ICU for 3 days, had a feed tube placement, and a week later had exploratory surgery, including a biospy of her liver and small intestine. With all her medications, it was 4,800. They cover 90%! What they cover: 90/10 Hereditary/Congential Defects.. As long as it is not considered pre-exsisting.. Best advice, enroll them as puppies. They younger they are the better. 90% of all Medications, 50% of RX Pet Foods They also have NO financial Limits, per year, per illness, per pet. It is lifetime coverage. They do cover hip dyslasia only if, the pet is enrolled in the first year of life.. It is additional fee to the montly premium.. I think its like $3 more a month.. I don't remember I just went ahead and added it. I also added optional benifits as well.. This, like Hip Dysplasia, coverage is optional.. and to be covered I had to pay an additional $6 a month but she is covered for, Physical Therapy, Acupuncture, Hydro Therapy.. They DO NOT cover Dentals, or yearly exams, or Heartworm Meds.. They consider that preventative care.. which I can plan for! It is stuff like what we went through in October that ran us $4800. I wouldn't be in the position to save that much and have it replenished for the next time. Or pay off Care Credit/Credit Card... So that is why I choose insurance. They also just started Direct Deposit. Now when I submit a claim, I don't have to wait for a check. They just deposit the money back in my bank account. I just recently made a claim for a refill on a perscription. In 24 hours I had the money back in my bank account. I do pay a higher premium a month because I choose not to have a deductible. But you can choose from 50-1000. For me, I would rather pay a higher monthly premium and get more back. So far very pleased with my decision so far.. I won't have a pet with out it. __________________ |
Insurance I have Trupanion insurance and it is great. As others have said, the younger you enroll the pet the better. Before there can be pre existing conditions. Six months after I adopted my boy, he had to get cataract surgery at 20 months of age. That cost around $3500 plus and he still needs eye meds now. Trupanion paid up with no questions. This was a genetic condition, which they cover. I chose to get the zero deductible and pay more. |
On our first visit to the vet , we got 1 free month of Trupanion , I have heard good things about it so we will keep this one. Hope we never have to use it though! |
Ins Wow, that was nice! I have never heard of one free month before. Glad you are going to get it, and I too pray you will not have to use it. |
I have VPI insurance and really break just about even on it every year. I keep it just in case something major every occurs. I am going to compare plans this year to see if I stay with VPI or go to another plan. |
We have Healthy Paws but fortunately have not had to use it. |
I have VP1 and it is good. It covers none of her hereditary issues. She has a few. Is there an insurance thart covers this? We are looking ro get another rescue Yorkie and worry the med bills for both may be too costly. Any other Plan suggestions? We live in NYC |
I have Petplan for Amy. Although she is only 6 months old I feel better knowing she has insurance. My last dog was a Sheltie and she had a lot of problems the older she got and I so wished I had insurance on her. |
We have Healthy Paws because it covers hereditary and congenital problems. |
Insurance I believe that Trupanion covers hereditary conditions |
Don't waste your money just open a dog account and drop $50 a dog a month in it. I had it and cancelled |
Trupanion doesn't cover patella surgery |
Trupanion I thought in the US it covered patella surgery unless it was pre existing when you enrolled? The trouble is that many dogs have the patella problem at a young age, before you enroll, and then it is not covered. The main reason I got insured was because of that later possibility. I may be wrong, if so I apologize. |
I'm in Canada and got my dog insurance from 13 Weeks old. It may be different here and in the US |
Trupanion I just called TP and they do cover LPs unless pre existing, in US and Canada. As for saving $50 a month, that is good too. But my dog had juvenile cataract surgery after I had the insurance for only a few months at a cost of around $3600 for one eye, and I for one am glad I was insured! He may have to get the other eye too, another large bill. Luxating patellas have a similar cost. It is the luck of the draw and I feel more comfortable being insured, but to each his own. |
Then they changed my plan. It clearly said on my package they didn't cover it. My dog didn't have it as a pre existing condition either. |
Ins Perhaps so. I specifically asked about Canada. But it is possible rules changed. I am sorry if you were not able to use the insurance. |
we have care credit. we've had it for 3 years and never used it and so far has not cost us anything. kind of like a regular credit card if you use it you pay and if you don't you pay nothing. so far all the vets up here in Michigan have said they would take it. I'll know more about this this Friday, my girls are going in for the ultrasound to see if we are pregnant. I know they are I can feel the puppies. Mainly want to make sure about how many and there size. it's well worth having in an emergency or knowing that you have it. |
my vet told me to take the money that i would spend on insurance and put it in a savings account which i did// i also got a care credit card and if you pay it off within 6 months they dont charge you any interest |
Have VPI for Waffles |
I have Trupanion and they have been wonderful. I pay about $35/month and went with the no deductible option. They are great about getting a check out within a week, but I am happy to see above that they started direct deposit (thanks for the tip). Charlie has severe allergies (grass, cats, chicken, gluten, etc) and they covered 90% of his prick testing and his weekly immunotherapy injections. There has been such an improvement in his health since we narrowed down his allergens that he is living a happy and itch free life now! They even cover his special shampoos and hypoallergenic dog food. I have been 100% happy with them and would recommend to any/everyone! Good luck! |
