There is a great quote in the "The Complete Yorkshire Terrier" book from one of the long-time breeders/exhibitors about Yorkies being able to make you lose you patience one minute, and they will have you on your knees begging forgiveness the next, lol. So true!

I never have to discipline Luma anymore...yes, I can honestly say that! I'm not a trainer like some talented and patient people, Luma is just very smart and caught on quickly when she was a puppy. The biggest thing we need work on is her attentiveness while we're outdoors.

All I can say is Positive Reinforcement! Luma is VERY treat-driven. Not all dogs are though. You can use treats, toys, physical affection, or just verbal praise as positive reinforcement.

She is allowed one bark if someone knocks on the door, and I tell her to sit, stay while I open it, so she doesn't run out. Then when I close the door again, if she is still sitting and waiting to be released, I reward her. We practiced this for AGES with just my bf knocking and coming in over and over. She does great now! I know she can still run out, but is much less likely to now than if we just let her yap and yap and jump all over the person coming in.

About the only thing I have to discipline for is barking at next door dogs at the fence. I just tell them "no bark" in a serious tone, never yelling. Once I went up and pulled Teddy Bear from the fence and said NO pretty sternly and he was so scared of me he wouldn't come near me for several days. He is VERY timid and shy. I felt so bad.

I mostly correct them for something indoors by saying "did yoooou do that" in a questioning voice? I think they get it. They are pretty good and I hardly ever have to correct them. I am never mad at them no matter what they do.

We teach eye contact, verbal cues and with hand signals. I hate the P word (punish !) I like: correct, redirect, teach and train. Dogs (people too :) ) repeat behavior that gives them a reward. That reward does not have to be food, dogs love praise, affection and being with us. To correct or redirect an action we use the cue words, Enough, No, Stop It we also use a Atttt sound or a hiss sound. You should use a cue that feels natural to you. Yelling is not necessary, a firm calm voice works best.

Kiki is so hard headed! She is potty pad trained BUT she decides she can try her luck about once a month and pee in the floor same area every month! When she does this she loses her freedom to roam about the house (which she only gets if we are home)and it made to stay in her area! But you have to do it every time or it doesn't work but like a child she is always great if we go visit.

Kayla and Dudey are our little trouble makers. I think Dudley only reacts out of being just alittle intimadated by Kayla. When she is ugly we put her in time out. She goes in the kennel for a few minutes. Then, I will ask her if she is going to be a good girl. She looks at me as if to say, Of course, am I not always.????

Tucker is only 5 months old and I tried the spray water bottle and he got a kick out of it and thought I was playing with him! So, I am trying the stern 'no", he responds some......I will keep it up....we often distract him .

That's no proof dogs are hard-headed or my Tibbe would be peeing everywhere. He's terribly hard-headed, a self-thinker and a sass-backer. Your dog was just unable to hold it until she got let out again or to her potty pad, the potty pad was soiled, you missed letting her out or her pee pads were soiled, didn't go the last time she was let out, drank too much water, bladder gets irritated, medication is relaxing the bladder, got scared or stressed or frustrated(lots of evidence dogs pee from frustration when they don't know what to do right then) or fearful or intimidated or just forgot - got sidetracked really pursuing something and forgot to go where and when she should. Don't you ever forget? Are you being hard-headed when you forget? Dogs do forget just like humans at times. There are many reasons a dog has an accident every so often. They are NOT perfect, even when fully housebroken. They aren't machines and make mistakes. But there is absolutely no evidence that they use pee or poop as a way to get back at us or show defiance. Peeing from stress or insecurity or frustration or submission or fear - that's more likely why she pees.

I rarely discipline Tibbe but read his body language and have him sit or lie down before he is going to jump up or something. Discipline should be all about shaping and guiding a dog into what is the correct behavior so usually I will just say "uh oh" and take away the attention he is seeking or direct him into doing what is correct. Mostly, though, I stop it beforehand. If he's about to leave his yard off leash or pick up human medication from the floor, I would say "No!" or "Leave It!" or "Stop!", depending upon which he might be starting to do and then retrain him in that area until he was trained not to do that again. Of course, as we all know, canine discipline is never about hurting or scaring or intimidation.

For me it was a process of elimination. I tried something and if it didn't work I found something that did. I've been very successful with the methods that I found have worked and have stuck with them for each of our new additions to the family. I have trained all four of our Yorkies using them and they are very well behaved. So, I took the time to write them down and include them in my web site, there is a link below.

But like I said , what works for some may not work for others.
