Getting started
 
I'll get Lily home in April, but guys I'm one that likes to plan ahead:D

So... what advice do you have for me?

1- food brand ---is royal cannin ok?

2- what kind of bed should I get? any links to websites? ( i live in Spain)

I will also need ideas to travel by car with her, what is safe? what is convenient ?....

potty training advice? I've heard about sprays and products like that...:confused:

Welcome to YT!!! How exciting to be getting a new pup! I remember the wait seemed like forever!!!

1. Both my ruby and Rosie were on royal canin when they came home from the breeder. I just recently switched them to something new because they were itching and did not seem as interested in eating RC. Go to dogfoodadvisor.com. there you will find the good and bad on different brands so you can decide.

2. My girls just have whatever beds cuz the mainly sleep on my bed. Cloud9 beds seem extremely popular on here. Search on here for cloud9 and you should find some reviews and website to purchase.

3. For my babies safety...we travel ALOT. They are always in the back seat in a wire kennel/crate.

I also need some info about vaccination...and how long should I wait before getting the chip into her skin? how old does she have to be?

I would suggest a car seat for your pup..with a harness strap/attachment for seatbelts.

I never used a spray for potty pad training. (maybe I should have..but I haven't).

I know you are just so very excited to get your baby! :)

Regarding the vaccinations, do you know what your breeder's schedule is for giving them to the pups before pick up?

I don't know. I was about to ask her but first I thought I wanted to stop and do some research on what is the right thing to do. That way I'll feel more confident when I talk to her and I'll know what to expect/ask.

any advice will be extremelyal appreciated

We've been using Royal Canin dog food for over 5 years and are very happy with it. It has a great record on quality control, and this is extremely important to me. I've talked with people who have toured their plants and they are impeccable. So many dog foods have other companies actually manufacturing the food and have so many more recalls. I would say it’s one of the safest foods on the market. Regarding a pet bed, don’t overlook cat beds when shopping for a Yorkie. My dogs prefer a small bed with an edge around the sides. It’s really the type of bed they would make outside if they had access to some leaves. Dog Bed Reviews | dogbeds.net

Every vet is different about giving vaccinations. Some give every two weeks, others every four. The same goes with breeders. Some start at Week 10, others at Week 8 or 12.

Have you spoken to your vet about what they recommend?

Chips typically do not hurt when they are inserted. Because I personally believe that there's no reason to wait, I'll be getting Thalia's done the day I take her to get her first shots on my end.

I just wanted to say "hi" and welcome to YT!!! Good idea to do as much research as you can before you bring your pup home. I did the same thing and am so thankful I did. Good luck and try to not count the days, if you can. LOL

If you do decide to change your dog food, please do not do it until your baby is WELL settled in to YOUR home and routine...Royal Canin is what I have fed for over 25 years, and when I got into breeding, they have special diets that are scientifically formulated to provide the best nutrition for a breeding female, a nursing momma, baby dogs and puppy mousse starter, it advances all the way through to adult dog at one year, progressing on to seniors. I have never had issues with itching and skin allergies, so I have had no reason to fret over food....it works great for my dogs and they have to best quality control available....which becomes really important when you start getting all those little dog food recalls because of different toxins, bacterial or fungus contamination, or ever plastic or glass....has not happened with Royal Canin . They did have one recall years ago in the one prescription bag of food, but that has been all. Foods are everyones own preferences....just dont traumatize/stress your new baby by immediately changing what ever food the breeder has started the baby on.

Yorkiemom1 and Nancy1999 give very good advice. Im glad you both spoke up about RC. There are so very many opinions on dog food and it can get overwhelming on here trying to research it. I didn't even think to tell you don't mess with the food when puppy was new to your home. I had Ruby for a year before I switched. Ruby still has the itchies but seems to eat better on her new food.Another suggestion I have is to please read up on hypoglycemia so that you know the signs and what to do if it happens. Always have a tube of Nutrical on hand. With vaccinations, my vet recommends that I only give one vaccination at a time since yorkies are such tiny dogs.

That's good to know. I will ask the breeder and let you know. And as soon as Lily gets home I will be taking her to the vet. thanks for your reply:animal36
