Good Mates for a Yorkie? Hi, I am new here and I currently own a Yorkie, she is the cutest dog ever. I named her Ariel after the mermaid. I am thinking about getting a Shiba Inu, I know these dogs can be mildly aggressive. Does anyone think, for any specific reason, why I would not be able to train this Shiba to not eat the Yorkie? <--- Not joking. |
If you don't have serious dog training skills I would suggest getting a breed that is much more easily trained and also one that does not have such aggressive instincts. Those dogs need a lot of exercise daily besides someone that can control their aggression. They are well known for their tendency to have aggression toward other dogs. |
Hi and welcome!! I looooove your little girl’s name!! I love the Little Mermaid!! Do you have any pics? Why do you want to get a big breed? The problem with getting a big breed is you are going to have to work non stop to train the bigger breed to live with your Yorkie. I know a lot of people that have big breeds and small breeds and it works, but it is a lot of work. Esp with a breed like the Shiba. Love that breed, but I wouldn't recommend them with a smaller breed- Now if you said Boxer, Golden or Lab I would be Ok with it. However those breeds as well are still big, lots of power and they will needs training to. I wouldn't recommend leaving (Shibu and Ariel) them alone, play time will have to be watched as well… What makes you want a Shibu? |
if your yorkie is the cutest thing ever why not get another yorkie, I have no idea how big the dog you are thinking about getting is, but if you want a mate where they can roll on the floor and play and chase each other, don't you think it is easier with a dog around the same size. If you get a big puppy it is going to be hard to keep the bigger dog from hurting the yorkie just by accident. There are people here that have both big and small but a lot of times they had the larger dog first, so when they got the puppy the dog was trained, older and calmer. So many people that have yorkies think they are better in pairs, but not pairs with 60 lb differences. It's like letting your toddler go play football or soccer with a junior high team,I doubt many parents would let their child do that so why subject your yorkie to that. |
Shiba Inu are around 25 lbs. on average. Their temperament is not a good match for a yorkie. They have a strong prey drive, are know to be dog aggressive, and have high training and exercise requirements. Wouldn't advise this breed combo at all. |
i have been told Maltese's are good with yorkies, i bigger breed would have to be introduced slowly :) but make sure that it is a smart breed :) |

I wouldn't recommend this combo either....they can be very aggressive towards other dogs...and with a yorkie with the attitude that we all love...not a good idea. |

If your boyfriend really cares about you and your little dog he will research the breed he wants and decide on a non prey driven dog. Yorkies are attacked quite frequently by prey dogs that see the little furry thing as a toy to chase and shake. They do not distinguish between a squirrel and a fluffy dog. One shake is all it takes. There is no way you could continually keep them apart in the same household. A young Shiba Inu would be constantly wanting to play and interact. The play would be deadly through. Maybe you read about a certain young actress whose Yorkie was killed by her own bull dog that has lived there for at least 2 years?Up until that day it was just fun and games. If you love your little dog then do the right thing for her. |

Sounds like the BF either wants a larger dog, or has his heart set on a shiba inu. So...could be hard to change his mind. Hope not, tho. |
I definitely don't think a shiba inu is a good match for a yorkie. Why not try something that doesn't have the prey drive? What about a golden? |
