For those who cut their Yorkies hair! I tried to do a search for my question but my phone wouldn't let me :-(. So here goes! I'm debating on whether or not to cut my baby Yorkies hair (when she gets older. She doesn't need it cut yet). Does anyone here cut their Yorkies hair? Her hair will be kept on the shorter side. I like the "westie" cut so will probably try that. I am actually also a hairstylist and have been doing hair for 7 years now. So I am just a little picky about how her hair is done. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should purchase in order to cut her hair? Do you guys use a grooming table? Are they safe? Any other advice would be appreciated! |
I just use wahl clippers and good scissors. I do own the blunt end scissors for around eyes and ears. I think the clippers were Unser 15 dollars. The blunt scissors were very expensive like 30. And mine sit well for trimming and shaving I don't need even a leash on the yorkies. |
I cut my yorkies hair and I too, went to cosmetology school. I just use my people hair cutting scissors. I do have a blunt nose curved scissors that I use to cut the skirt, face and a little by the eyes. Teeka has hair that sticks straight up into her eyes. I trim a tiny bit by her eyes. I don't have a table....I just use my counter to do all the grooming. I have never had a problem with one, trying to jump off. I don't use a thinning shears, but some people do. I also have a small clippers that I use to tip their ears and trim the bottoms of their feet. I would give it a try, it save a lot of money and I think the pups are more comfortable with "mom" doing the grooming! |
I do all 5 of mine. Each one has their own unique style that looks best. I use good ceramic clippers with the right size guard for the lenght I want. Tiny scissors around the rear, eyes and ears. I use a tiny mustache/eyebrow shaver for ear backs, be careful you can slice off a piece of skin by the edge of the ear. I shave ears with the way the hair grows dry, then trim the edges with tiny scissors when the hair is wet. I also use Scissors to trim around tummy and boy stuff. Westie cuts are blunt cut on the guide line and short clip on the back saddle area. Good luck. |
This little grooming table has been a huge help to me when taking care of Gracie's hair. You can set it up on any table or even the floor if that is comfortable for you. I don't always have an extra hand to help me with her but this is almost as good. You can turn it with your finger as you are trimming instead of having to constantly turn the dog. I cut Tatiana's hair, too. I'm picky about her haircut, too. For Tatiana, I like do the schnauzer cut, with no skirt. Only her legs, tail, and ears are kept long. This keeps her coat manageable, but she still has hair (so she doesn't look shaved down and scrawny). I like to use the Wahl Peanut clipper because Tatiana is small (about 3 lbs). I had to modify one of the combs so that it would work for me. I sanded down comb #1 so it would give a closer shave. For her face and head, I use small, round-tip scissors and a razor comb. For her safety, I groom her on the floor. She has the tendency to leap off if she hears something (like the neighbor next door, the mailman, etc) to investigate. |

We just got the Wahl peanut trimmer- way lighter than when I was trying to use a full size clipper. Just the right size for a yorkie! |
I tried to clip Holly once, she is still living with the aftermath. Now all she has to do is see clippers and she will bit the clipper it's self. Still I wouldn't mind saving the money. I want to see if any of the voteck schools around me offer a program that I could take at night. |

I keep Gracie's coat long for the most part so I use the clippers for her ears and feet mostly. I do trim her length with regular hair cutting scissors. I also use the scissors to taper down the hair on her legs. I have been using a small set of Wahl clippers but I heard so many good things about the Peanut clipper I have decided to order some. If you want to use scissors for her length then try cutting just a small amount at a time at first. I took Gracie to the groomer when we were doing a major cut down. I wasn't confident that I could make it look right but if you are skilled with the scissors then you should be able to do a good job with it. |
